Man this really appeals to me. All I want to do is live alone somewhere beautiful. Have a farm, hunt deer and wild boar, fish, sustain myself with a windmill or solar panel or some shit. Sit there and write, read books, work out, learn shit like how to cure meats, make prosciutto and sausage and whatnot.

Off grid is the way to go. I think it would do my GF a lot of good too if we did it, but I know she would never go for it. She goes crazy if she doesn't have a ton of social interaction with other people. Women need society - very few are able to live without an establish network of people, institutions, authority, and peers to follow.

I think in 2-3 years I'll have the money to pull this off with decent security. Damn, that will be the day. Quitting my job and knowing I'm quitting ... everything really.

Last book I read was a George Washington biography. I'm British so didn't know much before it. Washington always said that the happiest time of his life was when he had his farm in Virginia, designed ploughing machines, built his house. definitely an american ideal, we Brits don't have the space

I have 13 acres of woods that I bought this year, doing something similar. I need to build a better cabin and since I have extensive automotive pursuits a large shop in which to work.

I will be using compost to provide heat and topsoil, for more info check out Jean Pain. Passive 140f water at a gallon per minute for six months, plus methane will work in Siberia or Florida. Since my land is all wooded this works well for my project.

I have a fuel project as well, making ethanol from cattails, waste bread, spoiled produce, etc. I build engines specifically to run ethanol with high compression and heated fuel systems to extract better mileage than gasoline with quite a lot more power. Everything that comes out of the stills is useful for feeding livestock, improving topsoil, or creating methane, sometimes all of them.

The negatives you hear about ethanol are primarily bunk, but in an engine that will run craptastic pump gas you will lose mileage because it isn't working the fuel near hard enough. I've run it in 1970 vintage cars and trucks with modified carbs and stock fuel systems, and in unmodified EFI vehicles from the late 90s, zero problems with the fuel systems and the engines love it.

The way CO2 fits in with ethanol and methane is really sweet, its a large circle where you recycle, get more out than you put in, and you can grow food all year in a greenhouse with higher CO2.

You should check out journeytoforever.org there is a wealth of info there. Also mother earth news has good info for homesteading and off grid living.

If you want to know more about ethanol, David Blame has a book that spells it out. I am willing to help with technical aspects and tuning advice for running on ethanol, as well as engine builds to maximize output and efficiency.

Hard booze is one of the oldest fixes for bad food. Drink as soon as you start feeling weird and you get away with only one nasty dump, none if you're lucky.

OP have you checked out aquaponics? Very sustainable way of growing crops. Its designed for urban areas, so it might not be necessary for your location. But if it gets cold there, its be a great way to grow during winter also.

thats fucking awesome. I don't think Ill be able to go off grid in the country I live in ( a small ass country where there are competitions to find the photo with the most space covered without a sign of grid )

but.. I'm also a citizen of russia and my father has some land there. so... maybe one day.

I can't really choose between metro life or off the grid life. I guess you can't really have a large supply of girls far from civilization and I'm looking for that now.

Be aware that there's a news article out recently about a house that was condemned for not having city water, power, and sewer.

You seem like you probably already have, but if not look into your local codes. Be ready for government people not being happy with you off-grid.

Did you run your sewage treatment plan past your local munipal board? There are a ton of ordinances on that crap, and big fines and costs if you're found in violation and are ordered to come into compliance.

That's great you're off grid. How much land do you have? (both owning or/and to roam in)

There's always this romanticism of just livin' of the land and sustaining yourself. It feels more manly as well.
