My friend sent to jail for 5-10 years. Can someone explain it to me?(sorry if there's a better place to post this. I'm not big on reddit I just searched legal question and this was one of the things to pop up. And it seemed to fit the question)

Did he go to trial? Or did he make a plea deal? I'm also wondering what country and/or state this happened in.

If he made a plea deal, there's probably not much, if anything, that can be done. And unfortunately, a public defender is likely to have encouraged a plea deal.

Are you in the US or someone else? If his family (or friends) can help him afford it, he should try to appeal the case. It sounds like the judgement was absolutely wrong.

Get the ACLU involved. If you show them the video and it shows what you say it shows, they should be willing to help you.

There's an organization in the US that helps people falsely accused of rape on campus - it's right wing, maybe Koch Bros funded or something. I can't remember the name of it. Maybe if somebody could remember it they'd help with something like this.

Your friend was a moron for having kids in the first place. Zero sympathy for someone who put themselves into that position. He ignored the risks and now is paying the price.
