What the fuck.

[–]rg57 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's OK though. They included atheists.

Never underestimate the speed with which one minority will throw another under the bus, to get what they want. This is in part due to organized atheism merging with feminism.

[–]JakeDC 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Atheist checking in. Not to disagree with you, really, but to provide nuance.

When you talk about the merger between atheism and feminism, I know exactly what you are talking about. I watched that shitshow unfold from "elevatorgate" to the present. It is troubling. (The whole history is well-documented online, and worth a read for anyone who wants to lose faith in humanity).

Counterpoints, though. The SJW crowd encountered huge resistance in the atheist community as well. And they continue to. Indeed, Hemant Mehta, the author of the linked piece, is generally a sane, right-thinking person, and in my experince, more atheists agree with him than with the SJW faction. Indeed, if you read the article, Hemant calls out the fact that the circumcision-protecting parts of the legislation are bullshit, and laments the fact they they were included. He has called out the SJWs repeatedly in the past too.

As the SJW infiltration into the atheist movement proceeded, I found myself siding with the majority of people who opposed it. Atheists (at least "active" ones) tend to be rational skeptics and justice-oriented, so it makes sense that many/most of them don't like SJW nonsense. In fact, these atheists are waging a fight against SJW "progressivism" that is shockingly similar to the battle between SJWs and MRAs. This ongoing situation provided my first introduction to the intellectual/moral battle between voices of fairness/reason and SJWs which, in turn, brought me to understand and care about men's issues. The positions I take on both sets of issues are motivated by the same sorts of concerns.

TL; DR. The phenomenon you note is real, but it is a mistake to think of it as involving atheism generally. Many, many atheists disagree with this bullshit - and they are fighting a day-to-day battle that is very familiar to all of us on this sub. Indeed, search YouTube for videos of atheists attacking feminists, and vice versa. If you have watched MRA vs. feminist videos, you will be struck by the similarities.

(Although I agree that it is troubling that the AHA hasn't said anything about the problematic parts of the law. I generally expect better from them. I hope they say something - and that it is the right thing.)

The what fuck? FFRF hasn't sent me a goddamned thing about anything but legal challenges to religious encroachment on secular society, and some temple of reason they're building.

[–]ALTSuzzxingcoh 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The same shit the krauts pulled, isn't it? Ah, we can't let rationality and CHILDREN'S RIGHTS TO THEIR BODY stand in the way of 6000-year-old desert scrolls that say to cut their penis.

I think this is a perfect example of even the most moderate, humanistically-thinking people committing logical errors and more importantly, actually neither thinking nor attempting to use logic when finding solutions to a conflict. "Religious freedom versus right to own body? What, you said HOLOCAUST? Right, poor people, right to cut their babies it is!"

It's pretty much the same as if the NRA started expecting politicians to legalize shooting people. Sure, people should have a right to live, but weapons are tradition so fuck that. In b4 "he said circumcision is like killing people" ah go fuck yourself, non-comprehending children.

[–]Wisemanner 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

To protect Jewish rites, I suppose.

[–]Thinkmoreaboutit[S] 22 points23 points24 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Violates the rights of the child though.

[–]ThirdTurnip 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And that right there should be challenged in court.

This a human rights law which violates a human right. A court needs to pit the two against each other and determine that a child's right not to be mutilated trumps religious freedom here.

http://www.ohchr.org/en/professionalinterest/pages/crc.aspx

Article 24.1

States Parties recognize the right of the child to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health and to facilities for the treatment of illness and rehabilitation of health. States Parties shall strive to ensure that no child is deprived of his or her right of access to such health care services.

Article 24.2

States Parties shall pursue full implementation of this right and, in particular, shall take appropriate measures: (a) To diminish infant and child mortality;

In the US 1 out of every 77 infant deaths is due to circumcision.

Article 24.3 is the key one.

States Parties shall take all effective and appropriate measures with a view to abolishing traditional practices prejudicial to the health of children.

i.e. circumcision.

[–]JoelMahon 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If it was religious practice for X religion to cut off an arm (yes obviously much worse than circumcision!) and we allowed that it wouldn't be okay either.

Having religious freedoms is about allowing people to do things within the law for their religion without discrimination. An example of that being broken would be the anti-hijab thing France had going on at the beaches for a while, where other head covering was fine but purely Muslims were targeted.

[–]ALTSuzzxingcoh 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's funny nobody ever considers not having a part of your penis to be a breach of your right. Even if the whole HIV and cancer BS were true (the probabilities are ridiculous), do they realize there's "cutting of a minor's genitals" on the other side to weigh against? No, they don't. They never do, they never get that having a complete body is probably the most important right in every country (for adults) and every law and every constitution ever. Remember murder and assault?

[–]Vandechoz 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I do not think advocates should be persecuted for highlighting prohibitions on male infant circumcision. It seems weird that they were singled out for protection, but even they deserve the right to advocate for their beliefs without persecution.

Why are you archiving this? Did you read it? The author reports on the legislation. He starts with the atheism-related part, and says it is good (which it is). He then discusses the other parts - specifically calling them "a downside," explaining that they are bullshit, lamenting that they were included, and saying that they dampen celebration of the pro-atheism part. He doesn't agree with the circumcision provisions, and he makes no bones about it.

Honestly, I understand the impetus to archive link problematic, anti-men, pro-SJW content. But doing so for this piece is knee-jerk and makes no sense. Nothing in the piece is anti-MRA, and he disagrees with protecting the "right" to circumcise.

[–]JakeDC 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There seems to be some misunderstanding of this piece. Someone even gave an archive link for it.

In relation to the circumcision piece, the author says:

There is a downside, though...[The bill] means that if people who defend male infant circumcision or animal slaughter are “persecuted,” the U.S. will consider it a violation of religious freedom. Our government is therefore giving tacit approval to those practices. When the Senate had the chance to remove that section from the bill, they didn’t do it. No one wants to see people persecuted regardless of their beliefs, but our government shouldn’t endorse these barbaric practices even in a symbolic way. They shouldn’t be protecting those who seek to harm anyone else...[This] certainly puts a damper on any celebration of the bill’s passage.

On the circumcision issue, the author is on our side...

[–]PowerToAnnihilate 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fuck them.

[–]8thling 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

An act objectively worse than rape is being defended by our government.

An interesting way to approach this would be to sue for the right to genitally mutilate your daughter, and then claim that as precedent while suing for the rights of infant boys.

[–]Thinkmoreaboutit[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I consider circumcision rape, or sexual assault.

The last part of your comment makes sense. Excellent chess move.

[–]8thling 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It'd be hard to get the FGM case very high up, but still it could hopefully force them to render that ruling null and void by ruling in favor of MGM

[–]rnme5 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Bahahaha, you're such a pussy!

[+]pootinesque 9 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Excellent, for protecting atheists. I am one, and I see all that toxicity that religious fairy tales produce in the minds of my fellow citizens.

And it is rather instructive to see how some /r/mensrights members react to this. Too much religion in this sub.

[–]sc12435687 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Mensrights is having a negative reaction to this because it is pro male-genital-mutilation which is a barbaric religious practice.
