Should we boycott companies that hire people like Amy Schumer?

I was thinking the same thing. I've been a customer of theirs for years and lately have been disgruntled by their downsizing of men's clothing options. In the last year I've noticed that inly one little corner of the stores have been dedicated to men, and 85% toward women and children. I saw the new commercial and was thinking that was the final straw.

I'm not sure about this. I'd certainly boycott a company for something they did directly, like running a misandrist advertising campaign, but not necessarily for just hiring someone who's done something misandrist elsewhere. That's seems like a somewhat confusing message to try to send: "Amy Schumer is persona non grata. No company should hire her for an advertising campaign, or else you'll see your sales to men drop".

I'd rather focus on sending a more direct message, e.g. "This ad campaign is misandrist and/or biased against men. Stop running it and don't do this again, or else you'll see your sales to men drop".

The second message seems more direct, more specific and more useful to me. Should we focus on that instead?

I think the general idea is good. For example: I resolved to not see any films from Sony for a least a year, because of their stupid marketing campaign for Feminist Ghostbusters with the whole, "If you don't like this film, you're a sexist misogynist" idiocy. Now that's something that really deserves financial punishment, in my view.

Also, I've been toying with the idea of setting up a website to list companies which indulge in misandry, especial through their marketing and advertising, and encourage men to boycott their products. The site would specifically point out why each company is being boycotted, so that if there's a measurable financial impact the company will know exactly what they did wrong and how to correct it.

What are you thoughts - would you support that idea? Would you use the site?

I'd need help in terms of people reporting shitty ad campaigns etc, so that I can add them to the site. So I want to judge the likely level of support from this group before deciding whether to go down this path.

Not really a fan of telling people what they should and shouldn't buy based on politics. It's just social justice thought-policing idiocy IMO. If Amy Schumer helps them sell more shit then that says more about the people that buy it, than the company itself.

Boycott should be based on likelihood of success, versus the probability of harm to (relatively) innocent people.

So if you boycott a local butcher, you can call in the whole internet to devastate that business, harming not only the butcher, but the family, the employees, maybe the neighborhood.

But if you boycott Apple, there might be a blip in the news about how some people thought they could boycott Apple. People want their dongles, and they're gonna pay for them whether you boycott or not.

I guess I'm saying it's hard to find a good case.
