Last week my girlfriend and I went into town to the market. I decided to wear an ankle length skirt because it was hot out... you know what f-- it, I'm not going too give an excuse why I wore a skirt. I did it because I wanted to and I believe in fashion freedom. So that's that. Anyway, one of the female sellers yelled at me to come over to her and when I did she asked me what I was wearing under the skirt. I'm a pretty easy going guy that doesn't get offended by questions like this because I also believe people should have the right to say what they want. Plus people get too easily offended these days. They don't realize they don't have the right to not be offended. But it did occur to me that if the roles were reversed I'd be called a creep at best. So a bit of a double standard there.
I don't wear them often, but I do from time to time. Even to work. But I work in a creative field so it's not a suit and tie deal. Yet the people on the other side of our building are not creative types. They do have to wear a suit and tie unless they are female, in which case they can get away with wearing these bright colored dresses and strappy shoes or a pant suit or whatever. I kind feel for those guys. The fact that I can wear skirts when I like shows me it's not that our bosses are against it, but that the guys can't wear them because of clients they deal with. Which is understandable. It just sucks that's a double standard that exists in our society. How did we get ourselves into this mess?
In my personal experience a lot of women are cool with me in a skirt, but that said, women tend to be more critical than men. So I've noticed. I don't know if it's just that they expect men to be unflinching pillars of stereotypical masculinity while they run around wearing what they want and acting how they want. I'm not sure. But I have had two women tell me straight up they think it's wrong for men to wear skirts/dresses because those are sacred feminine things and if you take that away, what do women have? Which was the worst argument I think I've ever heard so I was surprised to hear it from two different women at two different times. All I could think was, you realize you're being hypocritical because women had to go though this same bs to wear pants a hundred years ago. Now you have an even greater variety of pants than men do, you can wear anything from baggy pants to super tight leggings or capris or whatever and nobody looks at you funny. So don't you think that's a little crazy to say that when you ladies are hoarding all the clothing variety?
That's generally how I feel as a man walking into the men's department. It's the same boring stuff every year with just a different pattern on it. This year it's camouflage, next year it's stripes or solids. Meanwhile the much larger women's department is just overflowing with variety.
It's all just weird to me how our society approaches this subject. It's like the worst legal sin a man can do in our society is wear a skirt. It kind of blows my mind because it's just a piece of fabric, yet if you want to make people around you give you strange looks and feel uncomfortable, just separate those shorts from two leg holes into a single thing and watch how the mood around you totally changes. Such a little change with such a big reaction.
