I know this is the kind of thing that gets this place a bad name, and no one is suggesting that we shouldn’t care about a rise in the number of teenage girls in the UK who are intentionally poisoning themselves, especially through a harmful overdose of drugs rather than alcohol.

But … latest figures for Suicides in the United Kingdom, 2013 Registrations from the UK’s Office of National Statistics again report that:

There were 4,722 suicides among people aged 15 and over registered in England in 2013, 215 more than 2012. Of these, more than three-quarters (78%) were male (3,684 deaths). There were 1,038 female suicides (22.0%). The proportion of males to females committing suicide has increased steadily since 1981.

Yet that Guardian article does not even mention this point - not even as a footnote or an acknowledgement or a concession. Instead, the report only refers generically to “10- to 17-year-olds”, and "young people” or, of course, to girls (my emphasis):

Nick Harrop, campaigns manager for the charity YoungMinds, said: “The steep rise in self-poisoning is deeply concerning, with this study indicating that young women are the most affected.

And

Over the 20-year period, the number of 16- to 17-year-old girls intentionally poisoning themselves almost doubled, as did drink-related poisonings among 15- and 16-year-old girls.

Prof Sir Ian Gilmore, chair of the Alcohol Health Alliance, said the rise in teenage girls consuming an excessive amount of alcohol was “very concerning”.

And

The gap between poisonings among girls and boys widened over time with the rate of poisoning in adolescent males less than half that of females.

It’s tedious to have to point this out, but I am not for a minute suggesting that we should not be concerned by a doubling of the rate at which girls are poisoned, but it seems incredible not to even acknowledge - not even once - that boys are three times as likely to actually take their own lives as girls.

Not only that, but by saying "the rate of poisoning in adolescent males less than half that of females" it even hints that the issue is trivial when it comes to boys.

I hear what you are saying but I think the story itself is fine. It's the absence of equivalent stories focusing on boys and young men suffering that is the problem.

[–]lasciate 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's a tacit admission that they don't care about males. A problem isn't a problem until/unless it befalls females.

You make a very reasonable point, but I think my complaint is still valid.

Obviously, if the key finding is that rates of intentional poisoning for girls and young women aged 10-17 have doubled over the last 20 years then that is noteworthy and I have no problem with them leading off with that issue.

However, my issue is more that there is not even a one-line acknowledgment or concession to the effect that “Although boys in the same age group commit suicide at a rate three times that of girls, there is fresh concern about the surge in he number of 16- to 17-year-old girls intentionally poisoning themselves” or something of that kind.

Compare the article linked above, for instance, with this one from The Guardian:

109 women prosecuted for false rape claims in five years, say campaigners: Charity accuses authorities in the UK of pursuing cases against rape complainants more aggressively than other countries

In this article, the focus is entirely on the women who have committed this type of slander/fraud - yet even so, the report is at some pains to introduce what is technically a side issue to that story - which is the allegedly poor and insensitive handling of such cases by the police e.g.

“The police trot out these words that victims will be believed but I don’t think they ever bothered investigating what [my daughter, Layla Ibrahim] was saying from the beginning ...”

and

Recent figures from Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary, the police watchdog, revealed that more than a quarter of rape and sexual offences were not being recorded as crimes by forces and rape is a hugely under-reported offence.

and

Lisa Longstaff, from War, said: “It’s appalling that when over 90% of rapists are getting away with it and two women a week are killed by partners or ex-partners, women who report violence are being imprisoned.”

We might well want to argue with the truth of a claim such as "90% of rapists are getting away with it” (i.e. how does she know? how it is possible to prove something that is by definition unknown?), but whether we do that or not, that comment is essentially completely irrelevant to the main topic of the report.

Yet it’s been included because clearly someone, the editor, the journalist, felt it important enough to mention in a story on women actually prosecuted for false rape accusations for reasons of ‘balance’.

The same kind of balance in the article I linked to above is somewhat conspicuous by it’s absence.

Thanks for taking the time to write out these points. It's posts like yours that I come to this sub to read. There are far too many women hating cunts on here lately.

Well it's the Guardian, they have to somehow make it all about girls and women or they lose their feminist approved free pass card for bad journalism.

True enough.

[–]5th_Law_of_Robotics 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Why include "accidentally" in that? Accidental poisoning isn't a suicide attempt, it's being bad at reading labels.

You may as well include automotive fatalities in male suicide rates then.

[–]KrisK_lvin[S] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I think the boring answer is that they just mean when a 10-17 year old is trying alcohol, possibly for the first time, it’s not their intention to drink themselves into hospital.

I’m guessing they’ve included it under more intentional attempts to poison themselves on the grounds that kids that age aren’t supposed to be using alcohol in the first place.

[–]rossraskolnikov 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

They're also implying that they're using alcohol, etc to self-medicate mental health issues. Therefore it's on-topic.

[–]KrisK_lvin[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, that too for sure.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I guess we could talk about how it's been IGNORED for so long

Suicide being the #7 killer of men & boys http://www.cdc.gov/men/lcod/2013/index.htm

We could talk about how 80% of suicides are Men & Boys http://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/pdf/suicide_factsheet-a.pdf

But rather than talk about those who are quite literally dying, I suppose we should focus on those who aren't. We could ask the question "Why are boys moving from poisoning to far more deadly methods" or "Why are girls more likely to make a call for help?" but those will never get asked.

[–]Mens-Advocate 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Indeed, the media commonly misplace the emphasis as Kris shows.

Here, I make the same complaint about the NYT, which emphasises females and delays the 3x ratio until the last of many paragraphs: https://www.reddit.com/r/MensRights/comments/4g5tak/ny_times_lies_about_male_suicide/?

[–]Mackowatosc 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

here, "accidently" for me is a tell-tale. As in, someone is an idiot.

[–]DavidByron2 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Technically you're poisoning yourself every time you take even one pill.

[–]KrisK_lvin[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, there is that, yes.

Feminists think that male privilege causes higher suicide success rates. If girls were given the same advantages as boys, they'd be just as successful at killing themselves as boys are.

[–]Il128 -5 points-4 points-3 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

A lot of men are in denial and are blind to the truth that's all around them.

Women naturally lie, deceive, and manipulate.

When a woman attempts suicide she's just trying to manipulate someone.

When a man does it, it's because he's lost all hope. Men usually kill themselves over a woman.

The truth can burn.

When a woman attempts suicide she's just trying to manipulate someone.

Neither of these points are true. That’s not denial - I think you likely know that yourself.

You seem to be in a dark place right now; people who says such things often are - it’s why they say them.

I hope you manage to see a way of that place - because there is a way back.

[–]Il128 -5 points-4 points-3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Oh shut the fuck up. September can't get here fast enough.

September can't get here fast enough.

Puh ha ha ha ha ha.

Good one.

OK, my mistake then - you’re not depressed just a cunt.

Have it your way.
