My wife was there today too. This type of activism can be very effective if you do it right. Come prepared with facts. Be polite. Know who you are talking to (rep names, stances, etc). Bring a friend or a dozen. Say what you are for, not what you are against.

I won custody of my son a few years back in Illinois. It was a downright battle, even though my ex had been arrested a few times. My lawyer told me that Illinois is one of the worst states as far as fathers rights go, essentially we have none. At one point when we had split she moved for 2 months without telling me where, just to be spiteful about seeing my son, with zero repercussions. I'm glad people like your friend are fighting the good fight.

I've said before that I believe one of the biggest failures of Family Law is that it preserves the financial ties of a family following a separation, but cannot preserve the love/support ties of a family following separation.

The consequence is that men (the typical wage earners) are forced to maintain the support obligation to the family while losing out on the love and support they used to get. The result is you get these angry, alienated fathers, and you get kids who grow up with poor role models.

I don't know how the Family Law system should be reformed, but I strongly suspect that it lies in a paradigm shift towards a presumption of shared parenting. It's not in the best interest of the child for their parents to be adversaries, or for one parent to "triumph" over the other.

Yeah, it's so much better having had BOTH my parents together so they could BOTH beat my bare ass for being/acting gay at such a young age! Would have been sad if there had only been 1 parent to beat-my-butt!
