Before we select this as a cause worth fighting for, I'll just throw in my own anecdotal two bits.

I know, and have known, many girls from Paris. And American girls visiting Paris on a student year abroad. Every single one of them has acknowledged the slightly horrifying ubiquity of getting felt up -- properly felt up, not "harassed" -- on the Paris Metro.

Only one actually seemed to be complaining about it (one of the Americans.) If it came up in conversation, mostly it was simply acknowledged without any particular rancor or even strong feelings; in fact, I can't say that any of the Parisian girls seemed agitated about it.

Maybe in an academic or legal setting, they might summon up some outrage. But I think in Paris it's just one of those things the locals know to expect and/or avoid.

I'm not passing judgment about this survey's methodology -- particularly since that exact kind of statistic, on the western side of the Atlantic, almost invariably represents an example of "advocacy research," i.e. cherry-picked, disingenuous science. And obviously I'm not adding to science here -- just relaying what my personal ears have heard, time and again.

I believe this. Why wouldn't I.? Since everything a man does or says is defined as sexual harassment these days, then of course every woman alive has been sexually harassed.

I'm not terribly familiar with Paris, but I'd be interested to know how many men have been harassed on trains there. I'd say that pretty much everyone, everywhere gets harassed on public transit if they use it regularly.

As behaviour such as wolf-whistling and threatening body language are hard to prove, it can then also be extremely difficult to prosecute offenders without evidence and help of witnesses.

Eye-contact = Sexual Harassment

Stepping on a woman's shadow = Sexual Harassment

Failing to surrender one's seat to any woman = Sexual Harassment

They asked people to come forward for a survey on sexual assault on trains. This is anomalous, but not very surprising. I'd say it's useless to gauging the extent of sexual assault.

A comment on Two-X pointed out, nowhere in the survey was the gender of the perpetrator asked. And yet, you can bet people will use this to attack men, ignoring woman-on-woman sexual assault, a not-insignificant portion of them as it happens.

When they do so, be sure to point it out to highlight how they don't ACTUALLY care about womens issues as anything more than a means to demonize and attack men.

IF they discuss the issue in a way that focuses on how women are seen by society as a whole and such, and how people need to stop sexually assault women and they do so without focusing on men, then you can agree in spirit, but point out that they may be overrepresenting the problem due to the methodology errors, but that this doesn't undermine the legitimacy of their point as regards campaigning against sexual assault, but point out that you're concerned they will repeat the same mistakes feminism has on rape and domestic abuse if they form yet another gynocentric campaign, and so any campaign against sexual assault should be gender inclusive. (Emphasize this is different from gender neutral, the campaign should discuss the different rationales and problems for each gender.)

Naturally this sub will deny the truthfulness of this study with a vengeance.

Now change the title to:

"Every woman in Paris polled in survey has experienced sexual harassment from muslims on trains."

They will embrace that study with joy.
