As a pro-life argument, "don't want kids, don't have sex" is logical. Pro-life people believe that once you make the child it is a person and therefore you can't simply relinquish your responsibility for it. That would go for men and women.

But when it's said by pro-choice people, such as in the article, there is a double standard whereas they retain their pro-choice stance for women but not for men.

I guess it depends on where you're coming from. It's certainly a moronic statement if you're pro-choice (as it sets up a double standard), but if you're pro-life you could logically apply that statement to both men and women without a double standard.

That gene wilder meme should say WANT instead of HAVE.

And don't get raped or sperm-jacked either.

[–]Rockbottom503 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I had so many arguments over this on yahoo answers! I made the same arguments for paper abortions and was laughed at consistently. Regardless of how it's looked at, consent to sex and consent to having a child are 2 entirely separate things - abortion makes that so! How is it reasonable or fair to say to one party 'you had sex, deal with the consequences regardless of what you think - it's in someone else's hands now' and to the other 'you had sex, this is potentially what happens if you want it too - if you do, you won't have to bear the burden of financial ramifications for it, if you don't we can make it all go away regardless of what the other person wants or says'. Women have choice - men are told 'man up' and deal with the consequences of the choice that's made for you. This is not equal in any sense. What's even more worrying is the concept coming out that when a man ejaculates anywhere, his sperm becomes an irrevocable gift - there was a case I read recently where a woman had given a man a blowjob, spat it out and then successfully inseminated herself with it - first the father heard about it was when a child support claim landed in his lap. I've read several cases where women have emptied used condoms and attempted the same...... What I'm saying basically is the argument 'don't want a kid, don't have sex' has no bearing! You can be as careful as you like with sex, it makes no difference and even if it did the glaring difference in choice after the event creates massive inequality! What of a man who is sexually assaulted (I have to say that as the definition of rape in English law still makes it impossible for a woman to rape a man) and a pregnancy happens as the outcome of that assault - why shouldn't a man have the same choice to have those consequences dealt with so he can move on with his life in the same way as a female rape victim??? How much uproar would there be if a female rape victim was made to pay their rapist a regular sum for the next 18 years?? Yet it's fine to do this to a man where the female perpetrator decides they'll keep the baby. I know I've gone a bit off point but I'll leave you with that thought!

Stop stop stop. That statement is perfectly fine on its own. This isn't about pro-life or pro-choice, or abstinence or reproductive rights. Its not even about equality or responsibility. Nature does not give one shit about any of this. Its the FACT of sex leading to children, since the dawn of life making up the sexual system of reproduction. Sure we can get into technicalities of being infertile and/or having artificial pregnancies, but the act of sex for the vast majority will always involve the risk of children, even if that risk is 1/10000 or less with birth control.

If you seriously, 100% don't want that risk, while still being fertile, while having sperm or eggs/womb that work, then that statement "Don't want kids, don't have sex" is without doubt totally logical.

Tons of MGTOW do it, virgins (willingly or not) live without it, asexuals don't have to give one shit about it, and the celibate obviously commit to at the very least, not having children naturally through sex. Even those extremist feminists who think all sex is rape, avoid it. We are not 100% pure sex machines that MUST have it like air or food or water.

Its as if people can't accept the reality of trade-offs, where the economics of opportunity cost, and the pendulum of pleasure verse risk is always ever present in almost all choices we are forced to face, can just magically disappear if we don't like it. That's just dumb. Its always been like this, for both men and women.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

"Don't want kids, don't have sex" is just reality. Sex makes babies.

Contraception exists, vasectomies exist, hopefully a magic pill will exist shortly too. Condoms are damn near perfect, especially if the woman is on birth control.

When you choose to have sex with a woman, you are choosing to be a parent. I don't care if you're male or female.

Now, if you want to talk about how women have "outs" like abortions or putting their baby up for adoption, sure they have more options than men and ultimately a larger say in whether or not a baby is born. But seeing as they take the lions share of the burden of creating the baby in their own body and having the effect of that process on their life, I think it's fair that they should get to choose to abort it or not. Sex is an inequal exchange. A woman is in a historically disadvantage position because they have more of a burden when a baby is made. Therefore they have more rights. Sex is not two equal people making the same decision, the male is making a much lighter decision. Safe haven laws are their own form of bullshit though. (That really only exists so people don't throw their babies in dumpsters.)

Egregious child support and societies views towards "deadbeat Dad's" is a separate issue from sexual reproduction.

[–]Snowfox2ne1 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes and no. I think legally both sides should legally be able to bow out of having a child. If the father wants the kid and the mother doesn't, it's not like he can legally stop her from getting an abortion. The problem is when women get raped, or men donate sperm, and the rapist or mother come looking for visitation or child support. The system is just completely bastardized through and through. I think the don't want kids, don't have sex thing is just the tip of the iceberg in a much larger issue. Yes abstinence is the only 100% sure way of not having issues, but it doesn't really follow the reality that people are going to have sex eventually. Once everyone realizes that, we need to address the "then what?"

Legally aborting or abandoning a kid should be available to both parties, but it should be legally binding that they are giving up any right to the kid for good, until the kid is old enough to decide for themselves if they want to have a relationship with the father. Obviously kind of sucks for the kid that wasn't born, but honestly, overpopulation is becoming a thing already, and having unwanted kids is not something anyone should be forced into, especially if they were on birth control and using condoms. The 1% should not be forced into something they don't want and actively tried to prevent.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Who foots the bill for those kids when Mom can't support them? If a kid is born, then someone has to pay. I think there's a lot of room for us as a society to talk about child support and the rights of Fathers, but I don't think anyone can argue rhat Fathera ahould be able to legally abandon their kids. The same sub that talks about how important fathers are certainly should not be advocating it.

At the end of the day I think the onus is on men to be selective about their sexual partners so that they and their partner are in agreement as to what happens if there is an accidental pregnancy. It's not society or the governments responsibility to care for your fucking kid, wanted or not.

sighs It shouldn't be a matter of her having more strain having to keep the child... thats her choice... and thats the issue, its completely her choice and we have no say, so why should we be responcible for the fact that she wanted a child KNOWING we didn't. Before you say "if you didn't want kids don't have sex" by that logic, if I enter into an agreement to have a child the moment I have sex, so does a women by agreeing to have sex with me... and thus she shouldnt be allowed an abortion... if we don't enter into said agreement then men should be allowed an opt out just like women... we have less rights over keeping the child (women don't need the fathers consent for abortions or to give the child up for adoption), so we should have more rights over the obligations we are put into because her keeping the child, if they choose to keep the child its their responcibility if they knew we didnt want the child... by the same logic because they have to carry it they are granted rights as to whether or not they want to keep it...

I don't argue for reproductive rights, i argue for mens rights to opt out of the obligations they are put under, when they said from day one they didnt want to be a father and the mother choose to go ahead knowing that.

If its the mothers choice to keep the child, it should be their responsibility to look after it... unless the mother was under the belief the father would help raise the child, and so she made the committment to keep the child under that belief.

mothers are granted more reproductive rights (i.e. they can choose if they want to keep the child) men arent granted reproductive rights and thus have no choice in whether or not they become parents...

thats a clear unfairness... so you say "ahh but their body is effected and so they should be allowed to choose" okay... but their choice shouldnt be allowed to impact another persons life for 18 years... so men should be allowed to opt out...

youll say "if they didnt want a kid they shouldnt have had sex" okay.. then women shouldnt be allowed an abortion unless they weren't aware sex lead to kids...

[+]tiltedrea -9 points-8 points-7 points 10 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

I might get hated for saying this but I don't support "financial abortion". And I don't think "financial abortion" is a reasonable solution to fix reproductive inequality between men and women.

People tell us that if we don't want a kid, we should use a condom. Perfectly reasonable for casual dating. But in a long term relationship, both men and women choose to give up on using condoms. At that point, the only protection is on the woman's side. It's really unfair to blame the man for not using a condom when this decision is made by both the man and the woman in the relationship.

I think a good solution to reproductive inequality would be the male birth control pill. God knows when or if we'll ever have one :/

[–]chocoboat 12 points13 points14 points 10 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Well, I disagree. If an accidental pregnancy happens and the man doesn't want to become a parent but the woman chooses to have it anyway, then that's her choice and she can be responsible for her own choice to have the child by herself.

I don't call it "equality" when the law can force a man to become a parent against his will, but would never dare to do the same thing to a woman. I don't call it equality when the woman has the power to control the man's future, and she gets to choose for the both of them.

The law tells men "every single time you have sex, you are risking your future" and tells women "you will never be at risk whenever you have sex, you will always be able to choose for yourself". It even goes so far as to allow these women to change their mind after the fact, and give up the child to the custody of the state if it doesn't work out for them. Do you call it equality, when the system goes that far to cater to women, but tells men the only choice they can have is to choose to never have sex?

(except they don't even get that choice, as male RAPE VICTIMS are still forced to pay up.)

The best solution is a pre-emptive contract that works like a prenup. It would state that in the event of an accidental pregnancy, the woman would have 100% of the rights and responsibilities for any potential child, and all rights and responsibilities for the man are waived. This way both the man and woman know ahead of time what they're getting into, and no one gets surprised by it.

Sadly our legal system would consider even this to be invalid. It insists that women must be allowed to force a man into legal parenthood against his will if she wants to.

[–]_Eggs_ 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

and the man doesn't want to become a parent but the woman chooses to have it anyway, then that's her choice and she can be responsible for her own choice to have the child by herself.

While I agree there is a double standard, the way to fix that double standard is very controversial. Pro-choice people will say that the solution is to also give men the right to relinquish responsibility for the child while pro-life people will say that the solution is to make it so neither parent can do so.

[–]chocoboat 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

the way to fix that double standard is very controversial

Why should it be controversial to have a woman be responsible for the outcome of her own decision?

If I were a woman who thought it would be an awful position to be in to be a single mother raising a child without any help and potentially facing financial problems while doing it, you know what I wouldn't do? Choose to become a single mother.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

People don't like to hear that. They think you've "forced the mother into abortion" through "economic necessity."

[–]garglemesh42 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well, tough shit. I don't like having to work 60-70 hour weeks. I don't like to hear our president drone on about the wage gap as if it's because women are paid less for the types and amounts of work. There are lots of things I don't like to hear, but I have to anyway.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Don't shoot the messenger my friend. I don't agree with it either, my personal philosophy is the one they love so much, "biology isn't fair."

[–]Snowfox2ne1 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think it is easy for us to say that when we aren't the ones having the abortion. I couldn't imagine having something growing inside of me and having it surgically removed. No matter who you are, that will fuck with your head in some way. I agree that men should have the right to waive responsibility, but I do sympathize with women, they are filled with the guilt and responsibility of an abortion or giving it up for adoption. I don't think I could ever wrap my head around something like that, and sometimes I think we as a group tend to lose sight of that and treat it like we are returning a lawnmower to the store.

[–]chocoboat 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I couldn't imagine having something growing inside of me and having it surgically removed.

Like cancer?

I guess one thing is true, I don't understand the feelings of guilt that some women have over abortion. If men were the ones who got pregnant... if I didn't want to have a baby because I knew it would screw up my life and I'm not ready for one now, and I used protection but accidentally got pregnant anyway, and now much like cancer I've got something inside me that's going to fuck up my life if I don't get it removed...

well, I'd just go get it removed without a second thought. Just like having a tumor or a wart removed, it wouldn't bother me at all. I don't see why there should be guilt or emotional pain over doing what needs to be done to stick to your plan of not having a child. It wouldn't fuck with my head at all.

But I understand that it does for some people and I'm sorry that they have to go through that.

[–]tiltedrea -5 points-4 points-3 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I know it's not "equality". I''m just saying that the financial abortion is not a reasonable solution for this inequality. It will either force a poor woman or a woman who doesn't believe in single parenthood to get an abortion despite not wanting to get an abortion. Or it will create a fatherless child. Do we really need more laws that creates more fatherless children? Again, I'm not saying this is fair. But we need a reasonable and responsible solution. (Like male birth control pills)

I think the preemptive contract is not a reasonable solution either. Let's say that it gives you the legal protection you are talking about. What happens if there is an accidental pregnancy and you end up wanting to be a father. What are you going to to if the woman decides to exclude you? You're screwed. It might end up being something you could regret for the rest of your life.

[–]chocoboat 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

It will either force a poor woman

Why is there always an assumption that the woman is poor? She might be very financially successful, but she still gets to force the man to pay for her choice.

or a woman who doesn't believe in single parenthood

If she doesn't want to be a single parent, then I assume she would already be choosing not to become a single parent. So she wouldn't be involved in this situation at all.

Regardless, no woman is being "forced to get an abortion". She is not forced to do anything. You act as if she is inherently entitled to someone else's money, and that denying her the power to take his money is "forcing her to choose abortion". This is not the case at all. She can still choose whatever she wants, she'll just have to pay for the costs of the child alone if she chooses to have it.

Or it will create a fatherless child. Do we really need more laws that creates more fatherless children?

These children are all fatherless anyway. A man who sends a check once a month is not a father. If you're worried about fatherless children, maybe we should stop incentivizing women to have children by themselves by guaranteeing that the man will be forced to help pay for it?

I think the preemptive contract is not a reasonable solution either. Let's say that it gives you the legal protection you are talking about. What happens if there is an accidental pregnancy and you end up wanting to be a father.

If you want to be a father, then don't use the contract. No one is being forced to use the contract, just like no one is being forced to use a pre-nup.

If you're talking about "what if you choose the contract but change your mind later on", the answer is "too bad for you". Guess what, choices come with consequences. If a woman chooses to give up a child for adoption but then regrets if a couple years later, isn't it awful that she can't get the child back? We must ban adoption, and force women to remain as the legal parents of these children against their will! (makes as much sense as doing it to men...)

[–]tiltedrea -4 points-3 points-2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I'm excluding rich women because not receiving child support will probably be irrelevant to them. Unless they want to raise kids with the biological father. I'm not trying to make assumptions about these women. I'm trying to pinpoint the kind of women who would end up getting abortions because of the men's lack of financial support, that's it.

All I want is equal rights and responsibilities for men and women after the child is born. I want men to have equal rights to custody in family courts, which we clearly don't have, just as much as I want the man to be responsible and support the child even if he wants to choose not to be a father. For me that's what men's rights is all about. We can't have equal rights during pregnancy, it just doesn't work. We are biologically different. They are the ones who carry the baby in them. Pregnancy affects/alters their bodies. They carry the risk of injuries and in some cases death. Pregnancy is physiologically and emotionally crippling for them. They have to take a break from their normal lives/careers. After all these adverse effects, they get a special right to choose to get an abortion, that's it. And this can actually suck for us. Didn't happen to me but a friend's ex-wife got an abortion despite my friend being really excited about being a father. His dreams of being a father got crushed after the abortion. In a matter of days he went from being the happiest man on earth to a man with severe depression. It happened about 4 years ago, he still feels the pain. I'm not saying this is equal or fair. All I'm saying is the best/reasonable solution to this inequality is actually avoiding the pregnancy. That's why I find the male birth control pill to be the solution.

[–]chocoboat 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm excluding rich women because not receiving child support will probably be irrelevant to them.

Too bad the law doesn't exclude them.

All I want is equal rights and responsibilities for men and women after the child is born. I want men to have equal rights to custody in family courts, which we clearly don't have, just as much as I want the man to be responsible and support the child even if he wants to choose not to be a father.

But it is morally wrong to force legal parenthood on someone against their will. Every human being should have the right to decide whether they want to become a parent or not. You (and the law) are demanding that men be responsible for something that they never chose, and may have taken every sensible precaution to avoid.

Why should men be responsible for the costs of a child if they never chose to become a parent?

How would you like it if the government called you up one day and said "there's a single mom in your town who needs financial help, and we've decided that you have to send her a support check every month for the next 18 years." Wouldn't you object to this? You never agreed to be a parent, you never chose to be responsible for that baby she just had. Why should you have the responsibility of financially supporting it?

We are biologically different. They are the ones who carry the baby in them. Pregnancy affects/alters their bodies. They carry the risk of injuries and in some cases death. Pregnancy is physiologically and emotionally crippling for them. They have to take a break from their normal lives/careers. After all these adverse effects, they get a special right to choose to get an abortion, that's it.

Sorry, that's not how it works. Abortion was not created as some kind of way to level the playing field, to give women something to make up for the fact that only women have to physically undergo pregnancy.

Abortion exists because sometimes women don't want to become a parent at this time, and there is no law prohibiting her from opting out from becoming a parent. She is free to opt out by the use of a medical procedure, or if she wants opt out using a legal procedure by giving birth and afterwards by giving the child up to the state, or to adoptive parents.

Men of course cannot opt out by the use of a medical procedure, because it would require invading the woman's body without consent, which is barbaric. Men should be able to opt out through the use of a legal procedure, but this right is denied to them.

Women have the right to choose if they become a legal parent, and men don't. This is inequality, and it's wrong.

Didn't happen to me but a friend's ex-wife got an abortion despite my friend being really excited about being a father. His dreams of being a father got crushed after the abortion. In a matter of days he went from being the happiest man on earth to a man with severe depression.

That's unfortunate for him, but the choice of birth or abortion must belong to the woman because it's her body where the pregnancy is taking place. Everyone has the right to bodily autonomy. There is no way to achieve perfect equality in this situation, but we can certainly do better than "men get no rights, women get to choose for them".

All I'm saying is the best/reasonable solution to this inequality is actually avoiding the pregnancy. That's why I find the male birth control pill to be the solution.

It would be a good solution, but it doesn't exist. It could also have a chance of failure just like condoms and other birth control do. Sometimes pregnancies happen by accident, that's just how it is. And while it's morally right for women to have the sole choice whether to give birth or abort, and to never be at risk of being forced into parenthood against their will... it's morally wrong for men to have no possible way to ensure avoiding being forced into parenthood against their will, short of remaining celibate for life.

The choice should be extending to men and women both. No one should be forced to take on the responsibilities of a choice that they didn't make.

If you don't mind, could you tell me if support the legal system when it demands that a male rape victim has to pay child support to his rapist?

That's why I find the male birth control pill to be the solution.

Yeah, and I think the solution is arbitration by pink unicorns from one of the moons of Jupiter. Sadly, neither one of these options are available to men right now. I'd love to see a male pill come to market. It would be an awesome thing for gender equality... But until we have it and men can buy it, LPS is the only alternative that makes sense. It's that or removing women's choice to have an abortion.

Hell, even if we did have the male pill, accidents can happen, and it still wouldn't be fair to force the father to pay for the mother's choice.

I think the preemptive contract is not a reasonable solution either. ... It might end up being something you could regret for the rest of your life.

I don't see any problem with something you specifically agreed to being something you regret for the rest of your life. Having a choice in the matter is much, much better than the current situation.

Financial abortion has nothing to do with condom vs. pill or magic male pill or whatever. Financial abortion is a guaranteed OUT from fatherhood. It is the male equivalent of real abortion or giving up a baby for adoption.

Currently women have 99% of the reproductive rights, and <50% of the financial responsibility. If you like things this way, and you like the way child custody is awarded, then you really have no reason to complain about how motherhood cripples women's earnings.

I don't think anyone is saying a married man could some how financially abort a kid way after the fact.

Paper abortion is about one night stands where a woman comes to a man with that positive test.

Right now the man has no rights. It is all the woman's decision on if she wants to be a parent or not. A man should be able to choose the same in that situation. It isn't right for someone you barely know to be able to get 18+ years of your income because they decided to become a parent.

If that is your argument against financial abortion, you should logically be against abortion as well.
