So she has went through the first stage militant feminism of I'm young and attractive what makes those pigs think they can talk to me. And has entered the second stage of I'm getting older why won't those pigs talk to me anymore

Shorter Valenti:

[Situation]. Misogyny.

But remember guys: catcalling is never about sexual attraction; it's about power. /s

Feminism : A movement with the stated goal of equal rights for women but whose actions point towards a culture of women being legally entitled to 'having it both ways'

Dude, that's what it always was.

[–]ghebert001 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I know it's obvious to you and I and that I'm mostly preaching to the choir but I'm sure some people who are on the fence will see this and get off the hamster wheel to use some of those critical thinking skills.

Then and Now

[–]Imnotmrabut 11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's odd how she blames Culture for her emotional issues, rather than having agency and being self aware. It's always S.E.P. - "Somebody Else's Problem"

[–]AvgGuy101 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's the beauty of feminism... if you're female and you're unhappy about something, then it's always SMF (some man's fault).

[–]imhighnotdumb 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The cognitive dissonance here is strong. It's almost sad as she's obviously a reflective and critical thinker but she has these blocks in place, which just don't allow her to see the situation for what it is because it goes against feminism.

[–]pnw_diver 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Valenti is an obnoxious imbecile and I wish she would find her own safe safe space ... on the far side of the Moon.

[–]DavidByron2 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The fact that feminism doesn't have to make any kind of sense is part of the traditional privileged roles women have. It's like women telling men to go catch a bug for them. It's irrational and silly but women get away with it. Feminism is like that bug. Everyone knows it's ridiculous and silly but they pander to it anyway. Most women just use feminism like a big shit test / power play. How fucking stupid will men be if we just tell them to do and believe fucking stupid things?

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I really wanna know who on earth "hisses" at people on the street. It doesn't sound like something that people with "privilege" do. As usual it sounds more like something that the homeless, mentally ill or otherwise downtrodden groups of men might tend to do as a response to actual, material disempowerment (not like the disempowerment feminists claim to suffer when they can't find cute clothes in their size).

Like most women

You got a source for that, bro? Seems pretty anecdotal.

Edit: If you get downvoted for asking for sources, you might be in a circlejerk!

Not the case in my experience though. That's the point; your experience is too small a sample of the population to make meaningful extrapolations. Plus, confirmation bias will skew you.

Not lying, and not inexperienced. Now do you see the weight of anecdotal evidence?

[–]ZimbaZumba 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Valenti's article is a masterpiece of an over simplified re-framing of the world and looking through a jaundiced lens. This is what Women's Studies does for you. She is also trying to mainstream herself.

[+]tiqr -9 points-8 points-7 points 11 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

It's not really a contradiction.

Being harassed on the street is not a compliment, and it surely has never felt like one. For most, if not all women, it can be scary and sometimes dangerous to deal with. But I can admit that - even as a seasoned feminist - sexism is a powerful enough force to still reside my head. Maybe by acknowledging as much I can begin to let it go (hopefully, long before I turn 45).

She continues to acknowledge the cat-calling is bad, but as she is getting older she is noticing that men pay less attention to her in all situations - cat-calling is just the easiest to notice.

[–]DavidByron2 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

of course it's a contradiction. She pretends cat calling is bad and then she says she misses it.

[–]mra6543 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No sir. You see, in the first situation, the real problem was that the majority of catcallers were unworthy. In the second, it's that there are no catcallers left at all.

It becomes crystal clear and logical once you allow for the fact that women don't regard the bottom 80% of men as men, but as creeps.

[–]tiqr -4 points-3 points-2 points 11 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

A person can miss something that's bad.

In the 2nd article she clearly, and unambiguously states that cat calling is bad. Her position hasn't changed. She's just pointing out that she misses being found attractive, and that cat-calling was one form of evidence that she was being found attractive.

It's nuance. Something this forum loathes.

[–]DavidByron2 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

A person can miss something that's bad.

No. No they can't.

She's just pointing out that she misses being found attractive

ie she found it (catcalling) good.

[+]tiqr -7 points-6 points-5 points 11 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Again with the no nuance buddy.

As per another comment of mine in this thread:

"Now that I am poor I miss getting robbed because it meant that I had money worth stealing"

You can miss being robbed because it reminds you of having money.

[–]DavidByron2 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Self contradiction isn't "nuance".

"Now that I am poor I miss getting robbed"

Said nobody ever. That's the point. You seem to be unable to get the concept of a metaphor.

You can miss being robbed

No. No you can't.

[–]ianiemasns 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

You can miss being robbed because it reminds you of having money.

No, you miss having money.

Even working with your analogy here, the person who misses being targeted for theft because they outwardly appear wealthy would quickly and regularly admit that wealth has a lot of advantages.

What she's doing is acting like the rich person who NEVER admits that they have advantages in being wealthy, only ever talks about how hard their life is (being rich sucks you guys, people try to rob me all the time, it's horrible!) then loses their money and suddenly complains about not having money.

Even if she isn't contradicting herself, she's still playing the game of "always present everything that happens to me as bad", which is a shitty thing to do.

If being attractive means getting attention, some wanted and some unwanted, and being unattractive means getting no attention, wanted or unwanted, and she's going to bitch about the disadvantages of either state, what the fuck does she want? Some magical situation where only the men she wants attention from give it to her only in the way she wants, only when she wants it? Is that any kind of reasonable expectation?

[–]girlwriteswhat 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

She wants what she wants.

[–]ianiemasns 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Which is to constantly complain and play the victim?

[–]girlwriteswhat 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And profit from that.

[–]SirSkeptic 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nicely put.

[–]girlwriteswhat 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

More like "Now that I'm poor, I miss being envied."

[–]ExpendableOne 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Are you trying to compare catcalling to being robbed, in this metaphore? wtf? Women aren't being "robbed" of anything, when random guys try to get their attention or openly put themselves at their disposal(it's pretty fucked up that anyone could even equate male heterosexual attention as being robbed or harmed in the first place).

A better analogy would be, if anything, a rich person constantly complaining about banks calling her to offer them better credit cards or investments, schools calling to ask for donations or businesses calling them to ask for investments, then when that person is poor she misses having all these different banks, schools and businesses calling her with all these different opportunities anymore.

[–]Imnotmrabut 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

....in your opinion?

You seem to lack the capacity to grasp irony, nuanced or otherwise!

[+]IcarusBurning -7 points-6 points-5 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I appreciate your efforts to elevate the discussion here, even if it nets you downvotes.

[–]tiqr -5 points-4 points-3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thanks for the appreciation. That cancels out at least 100 down votes for my ego.

[–]ZimbaZumba 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Your disingenuous verbal gymnastics and re-framing is in the same league as Valenti's. People have had enough of this type of shit, the party is over.

[–]CaptainNeeMoNoy 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree with you that it isn't a contradiction and I don't like to see you getting down voted for posting a legitimate quote from the article.

However, I feel like Valenti has unintentionally captured the true underlying motives of the anti-catcalling movement. Valenti used to get catcalled and hate it, but now that she's gotten less attractive she misses the attention she used to receive from men.

Catcallers are assholes. There are appropriate times and places to approach a women, and yelling "AY, BABY" to some lady who's walking to work isn't going to be welcome. But I feel like many of the instances labelled as catcalling or harassment are just cases of unattractive men trying to strike up a conversation.

For example, in that video where the woman walks through NYC for hours and records men "catcalling" her, many of the clips were just dudes saying "hello" or trying to strike up a casual conversation.

I think that if you replaced the unattractive men in those videos with handsome, built, well-dressed guys with great social skills, there would be very little outrage.

TLDR: actual catcalling is asshole behavior but assholes will always exist, and they don't care if you don't like getting hit on. Many incidents labelled as "catcalling" are just unattractive men trying to be nice or have a conversation.
