Rebecca Reid applauds her for exposing the isolation that hits so many women in Britain

Again, a predominantly male problem is hijacked by feminists. With the increased focused on female achievement, women still want partners with a higher social status. This leads to a growing group of men who never have children, while women "recycle" higher status males. (http://sciencenordic.com/quarter-norwegian-men-never-father-children)

Men feel more depressed and isolated than women if they do not have children, new research has found. Presented at the British Sociological Association's annual conference, the study also revealed males are almost as likely as their female counterparts to want a son or daughter of their own. (http://www.bps.org.uk/news/childless-men-feel-it-more-women)

Initially I was irked by Weisz’s confession. How could she say that she wasn’t a full and complete person before she was in a relationship? What message does that send to independent young women?

It sends the same message that has been sent to men since the beginning of time. "You're not a man until you have won the approval of a woman."

Finding a boyfriend cured my crippling loneliness, but left me feeling like a very bad feminist.

It is amazing that she doesn't see anything wrong with an ideology that promotes loneliness and depression by making women feel guilty about finding love and companionship through a male partner. It is somehow "below" strong, independent women to admit that man could add something meaningful to their life, making her search desperately for a "worthy" substitute and getting severely depressed in the process. It's really sad to watch.

Edit: Incorrect mention of "working class"

[–]xNOM 10 points11 points12 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I also found this astounding. This woman has zero capacity for critical thinking. She really thinks social isolation is a "female" problem?

[–]garglemesh42 11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

From what I've seen, it is almost exclusively a male problem. Try making new friends when people think you're suspicious just by being male and talking to a stranger. Yes, this happens even when you join a social club.

[–]xNOM 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Perhaps the difference is "feeling lonely" vs. "social isolation," i.e. BEING lonely. The survey she referenced asked about "feeling lonely."

[–]garglemesh42 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ah, yes. Feelz > realz.

[–]Sasha_ 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've known them both for years. And you're pretty much right.

[–]ExpendableOne 11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Again, a predominantly male problem is hijacked by feminists.

Yeah, that's pretty sickening. You could have a million men sharing their pain over some pretty crippling level of loneliness and rejection from women, for some really fucking shitty reasoning from women, and the response is "cry harder bitch!", "you're an entitled misogynist!", "You're not a real man!",etc. It doesn't even matter that the way women treat men might be leading to all sorts of cases of depression and suicide, or some very violent outbreaks, the response is always "it's their own fault".

A few white women complain about being lonely, despite not making any effort of their own to actually find a parter or invest themselves into someone, and suddenly it's a very deep and heartfelt issue and the response is still, somehow, "it's men's fault".

[–]_pluto_ 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Brutally accurate. The empathy gap is real.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They demonize and dehumanize men. Then they whine about men not wanting relationships with them. Neat.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (31 children) | Copy Link

I agree, I also think that the MGTOW movement could create huge problems for females. The outcome will be a rapidly falling birth rate.

[–]rottingchrist 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

MGTOW is not a problem because it may reduce the birth-rate. It won't. It's a problem because men who aren't chasing women will reduce their economic output and consumption, and the tax revenue that can be squeezed out of them.

[–]dungone 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The MGTOW movement is far too small to make any difference, especially once you factor out all the men in it who weren't having any luck with women to begin with. More importantly, MGTOW is not sustainable and will never grow very large for all of the reasons that u/Sinisus laid out. Men without women get lonely and depressed, too.

[–]the-tominator 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't agree with you about MGTOW, but I do agree that men and women need each others company to obtain maximum happiness - we must learn from feminists' mistakes not copy them. The thing is, modern women are very hard work because of Feminism. They have raised all their expectations but lowered the standards to which they hold themselves. Men, on the other hand, don't seem from my experience to have done either. This is why MGTOW is popular IMO. But if women hadn't changed, I don't think as many men would reject them altogether - because men and women ultimately need each other.

[–]dungone 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

MGTOW is not popular. Maybe among a very narrow segment of the population, but I don't think it's depriving women of dating options.

[–]xNOM -4 points-3 points-2 points 11 years ago (25 children) | Copy Link

The outcome will be a rapidly falling birth rate.

No it won't. It makes me laugh when MGTOWs say this. There have always been MGTOWs. There will always be MGTOWs. Gay men, for example, are the ultimate MGTOWs.

Sexual reproduction is asymmetric. Sperm are abundant. Eggs are not. The whole point of this arrangement is that males have to compete to mate. Males are the evolutionary hammer.

As one can see from the link above, Norway is not in danger a sudden population crash. The fertility rate is 1.9. 1.8 for women born in Norway. There will certainly be no explosive growth in the future, but decline to zero is not a danger.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Let's talk about Japan now.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (23 children) | Copy Link

I believe you are wrong. Men do not always compete. Women also have to make themselves attractive to win a mate. Short skirts, make up etc. They are not doing it to attract women.

We also have DNA testing to ascertain the father, contraception and alternatives to sex! i do not think you can apply evolutionary biology to western society at all.

As for Norway: They are blessed with an abundance of oil. Society does not need men or women to work at all. They have more holidays and higher pay than any where in the world. The population is about 5 million. because Norway is so rich due to luck you cannot apply this to the rest of the world.

As for MGTOW the movement is undoubtedly growing. I would also suggest that there are many more gay men now than there were 20 years ago, or at least now they can live more easily as gay.

[–]xNOM 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

Women also have to make themselves attractive to win a mate.

No they don't. Women have to make themselves attractive to win a GOOD mate. The prison guard hag who helped the NY guys escape, got fucked plenty. What is the statistic? 80% of all women who ever lived, reproduced successfully. Compared to 40% of males.

[–]dungone 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Actually I think that this statistic has been debunked.

[–]xNOM -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Are you sure you are not referring to the earlier version which stated that 20% of all men who ever lived have sucessfully reproduced?

[–]dungone 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

No, I'm not sure. I wasn't aware of there being a more reliable statistic.

[–]xNOM 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I found one of the main papers on the subject. It seems to be the source of the 80% / 40% estimate.

http://mbe.oxfordjournals.org/content/21/11/2047.full

EDIT: I also found a discussion on it here: http://lesswrong.com/lw/h4e/differential_reproduction_for_men_and_women/

"other species" also seem to have a higher reproduction rate for females than males.

[–]xNOM -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Well, I think they are both only rough estimates. In any case, the point is that the female number is higher than the male number, and this is what you would expect from asymmetrical sexual reproduction.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Do we really know why, though? It could be that pre-historic males were much more likely to die at a young age than their female counterparts. It could also be that in conjunction with a female preference for somewhat older males. I feel like I see a lot of people look at the 40% men / 80% women historical reproduction statistic and immediately jump to the conclusion that women all want to screw some small minority of "alpha" males. While I understand the temptation to do so - there are other, equally valid, potential explanations that don't support the alpha/beta hypothesis.

[–]_pluto_ 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Not my area of expertise -- but do we know that for a fact? Couldn't the 80/40 ratio be explained by the fact that (under civilization) men have a bad habit of dying in wars?

[–]xNOM 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

That is an example of EXACTLY why the ratio is the way it is. When sperm are abundant and eggs are not, it allows one gender to be expendable and do dangerous things without a large effect on the fertility rate. It also makes that gender the one where the human genome comes more into contact with the physical world instead of the social world and thus benefits the species through more variability in that gender.

EDIT: It is possible to reproduce sexually but symmetrically (hermaprodites like earthworms). But this is rare compared to the asymmetrical version. Asymmetry obviously has advantages sometimes.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The prison guard did not reproduce with the inmates. You are looking back not forward. DNA testing etc and modern society has changed everything which is my point. Evolutionary biology will not work. Western society is doomed and in my opinion the current gender set up is largely to blame.

[–]xNOM 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Western society is doomed and in my opinion the current gender set up is largely to blame.

This is a rather ridiculous assumption, IMO. Genes are not rigid. The whole point of sexual reproduction is that genes can die out, and new ones can arise.

A much more likely scenario is that humans simply evolve to adapt to conditions where women no longer need to have 4-7 children to keep the population from collapsing.

You can already see the evolutionary pressures at work. Higher education leads to more prosperity and lower infant mortality and longer lifespan. Women with high education levels have fewer children. These two forces will work against each other until a balance is found. The fact that the world population has stopped increasing exponentially does not mean we are doomed to extinction. Also the fact that the world population may decrease sharply does not mean we are doomed to extinction. Ecologically this is actually a good thing.

[–]xNOM -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

As for Norway: They are blessed with an abundance of oil. Society does not need men or women to work at all. They have more holidays and higher pay than any where in the world. The population is about 5 million. because Norway is so rich due to luck you cannot apply this to the rest of the world.

The fraction of the male population which is non-participating is important, but there are many factors which determine fertility rate.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_fertility_rate#Factors

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

From your reference you have answered my point entirely:

A systematic review of European fertility rates came to the result that they do not seem to decrease significantly by availability of contraception.[13] It pointed out that significant factors for low fertility rates include instability of modern partnerships and value changes.[13] It also stated that government support of assisted reproductive technology, policies that transfer cash to families for pregnancy, and child support have only a limited effect on total fertility rate.[13]

[–]xNOM -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

You are not looking at the big picture. YES there are social forces driving fertility rates down. NO this does not mean a devastating population crash and the end of western civilization.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

The birth rate in Hungary is 1.4. the population is contracting at 40,000 a year. Japan and Singapore it is even worse.

[–]xNOM -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yes and why do you assume that this will continue until the population is zero? IMO, this is just as silly as the Malthusian population bomb assumption from the 1960s. The fact is, noone knows how humans will adapt.

Japan and Singapore might actually benefit with a lot less population. These countries have almost zero natural resources and are pushing the limit already.

The cultures which figure out a way to simultaneously have high education, high development, and 2.1 fertility will point the way to the future. The West is at the vanguard here. Not at the rear. How this fits in with hard-wired gender reality is incredibly interesting. There may be another evolutionary "great leap" except this time it is a gender "great leap." THIS is a true test of nature vs. nurture.

[–]_pluto_ -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I agree with you for the most part. But I admit to finding this work intriguing (not for the Freudian stuff, but the correlation):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._D._Unwin

[–]ExpendableOne -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

The outcome will be a rapidly falling birth rate.

That's not really how biology works. One man can still impregnate many women. Unless all men were to take part in this, women would eventually just flock to the remaining "elite", and the only thing MGTOW would accomplish is decrease the diversity in the gene pools.

[–]belflandluvr -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's rediculous to claim that lonelieness and isolation is a male problem. It has nothing to do with gender. Sure, some studies have said that men are lonelier in old age, but other studies say that overall women are lonlier. But I honestly doubt there is any significant difference in the way loneliness affects men and women. Besides, if roughly the same amount of men and women are straight, then it would be impossible for more men to be without a relationship than women (unless there is a significant minority of men that have relationships with multiple women? I don't think this is the case though).

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

White, who wryly refers to herself and an “authority on loneliness” found, just like Weisz and just like me, that the cure to her loneliness came from companionship.

wow, that's so deep

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Outstanding.

[–]bertreapot 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

humans are social creatures. we're wired to be part of a group; we're also wired to pair up, that's where new humans come from.

women are misled if they feel they're betraying "feminism" by desiring human contact. nothing is more natural than relating and connecting to other people. it's a fallacy to think you can be independent of all human contact, and that independence makes you a strong human, or a "good" feminist.

this sentiment very much reminds me of my high school girlfriend and her friends. they really went overboard trying to prove that they were capable of being strong women, entirely independent of men. what they ended up doing was shitting on people who cared about them. it's your choice if you want to remain manless or not, however you're largely deceiving yourselves if you feel you'll achieve happiness by subscribing to a dogma that has no achievable end in sight.

[–]ExpendableOne 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Lets not pretend like those women weren't literally choosing to be alone. They had countless men at their disposal, plenty of which would have been open to egalitarian views or feminist views. They chose to ignore those men, because they felt like those men were bellow them. Narcissism and entitlement were their problem, not their circumstances.

Most women seem to see their own professional and personal successes as a way to justify finding a man of even greater status, rather than as an opportunity to have the freedom to pick whatever guy they want regardless of their personal income or accomplishments. There was nothing stopping them from finding a nurturing and supporting guy, to supplement their careers, but those are the type of men they would brand as "unfit" or as some sub-human level of invisible.

[–]the-tominator 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It seems the whole 'I won't go out with a guy who earns less than me' attitude really causes problems for rich women now.

[–]_pluto_ 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Is it just an "attitude" or is it some sort of deep seated hypergamous instinct?

[–]Unconfidence 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[–]the-tominator 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Wargame4life 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

lol true karma, if you go out of your way to declare how you "don't need no man" you get left to deal with the consequences.

men are somewhat lucky as they can become totally absorbed into a passion or hobby and things generally fall into place. i was just the other day watching "alone in the wilderness" about a guy who chose at 51 to live 35 years on his own in a cabin in alaska, and he was a pretty cool guy, i have yet to see any historical or present day feat where women choose to live in isolation or engage in really isolated lifestyles by choice at the same rate.

hence in a game of relationship chicken it seems women need men more than men need women, hence the market is adjusting, and you see less men becoming "committed" since a replacement is more easily sourced.

this is what happens when you price yourself out of the market, the more demanding and unreasonable you are the more likely you will be replaced and rejected, and women seem to be much less self critical then guys when it comes to realistic expectations etc.

[–]xNOM 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"alone in the wilderness"

This is an awesome film. I kept thinking "completely boring," but couldn't stop watching somehow.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I never message women who are crazy enough to put feminism on their OK cupid profile.

Plus, women who are hard core feminists really do suck at making friends with men. I have female friends myself, three sisters and their friends. That's a pretty large sample I'm talking about.

It's not as simple as "feminism is the radical notion ..shit shit and shit".

It changes your perspective about men. Which is obvious from the way they ignore men's issues and mock " male tears". There's no surprise here.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I am convinced that the current set up of the genders with regards to jobs, education, relationships and society in general is not sustainable. If we carry along the current path society will collapse.

[–]the-tominator 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It already is collapsing. Fatherlessness will grow generations of morally-confused adults, leading to more crime and even less values. And female entitlement will cause much loneliness and depression for everyone. In my opinion, both these problems are in large part created by people's inflated egos and navel-gazing attitudes. For example,

[–]the-tominator 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

hit send by accident, can't edit on my phone. But I was going to say...

For example, the article itself. It shows how her self-obsessedness about being a 'good feminist' lead her to loneliness, and no doubt some men too who could have been with her.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree entirely, we are just watching in slow motion. Personally I think it is too late to change direction for Western society since all the logical options are not politically palatable. In Europe the group that can outbreed the weterners will win which looks like Muslims.

It seems to me they want to create a society in which all women have access to the top men, for purpose of producing children at least, and the vast majority of unwanted men toil away out of sight to support them.

[–]EvidentlyTrue 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I wonder how many feminists there will be in a few years time, men are starting to realize that they don't want anything to do with an ideology that despises dismisses and degrades them, and will avoid any feminists like the plague, I've already come to share this view with pretty much every man in my family and every male friend i have.

Two things are likely to happen in the future:

1) Women will notice how unhappy they are being alone and stop being feminists.

2) The next generation of girls will see all the lonely women in their 40's and 50's who are still harpening on about feminism and equality but are lonely and bitter as fuck, and will not touch feminism with a 10 yard stick.

Either way feminism is doomed, its an ideology that attempts to separate two genders and defy human nature itself, its had its run, and its certain to fail.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Most men don't ask for much. They just want a woman who is okay looking, will fuck him once in a while and won't nag him constantly. Women, on the other hand, aren't satisfied this easily. They're always on the lookout for something better.
