As I understand it, Tim Hunt was actually a big supporter of woman in science and was actually extremely accommodating and did all he could to promote interest in science.

I'm still shocked that nobody has come to his defense. He didn't demonstrate bias, he was making a joke and a point. He was making light of the fact that there isn't really any good reason that woman shouldn't be in science. Atleast that is how I've interpreted it.

Also how can we hold people from past generations to a modern standard. He is of an era where there were NO woman in science, where we were taught in school that girls cry more than boys; something everybody has observed in life.

I feel really bad for this guy.

I met him at a conference this past summer. He's an incredible speaker with a magnetic personality, very witty and sarcastic though. Even with his dry wit, no one who has ever met this guy would criticize him for being intolerant of anyone, he had the utmost respect for women in the sciences. He even made a comment about how happy he was so many women had attended the conference!

A pity that so few authors and commentators have the courage to actually name feminism as the source behind most of this butt-hurt outrage. For a change, kudos to the Mail editors.

Perhaps instead of making a fairly bland joke about women in poor taste and subsequently apologizing about it, he should have tweeted about killing groups of racially denominated men and been unrepentant about it.

Because people who do the latter get to keep their jobs at universities in London.
