I have a poster in the Physics department in my college (Brit defined) and for some reason it is aimed at year 9s. It tells them about a unique oppurtunity to visit Oxford University and do some courses and look at some exclusive research, or something...

...Did I say Year 9s? I meant Year 9 girls. So if you want to be an astrophysicist wanting to a degree at Oxford and are looking to put something on your CV - hope you're a girl!

"active fit" seems like it could be a class just to get people moving, to just be active. Boy shave a lot of pent up energy, we don't need ideas or motivation to burn it. Young girls tend not to be as physically active as girls.

Do you know what this class actually is at all?

My guess it's just a class along the lines of "play 60", just geared towards getting less active kids to play and get moving. Maybe that is what this class is, geared for girls? If that is the case, I can't really feel it's a big deal at all.

if it's a public school or a private school that gets government funding, they're not allowed to make classes only for boys or for girls. they have to let you join. actually it might be fun. i joined a yoga class that turned out to be all girls except for me and like 2 other guys when i was in high school.

basically there can't be an an all-boy or all-girl class in a school with public funding. title IX says it's a big no-no. still, discrimination against boys is seen as standard, while discrimination against girls is picked out and stamped out.

think about it like this. have you ever seen a school describe "varsity football" with a -Boys next to it? they intentionally remove gendered descriptions of every masculine/male class or activity to ensure that they won't be sued or accused of title IX discrimination. but they don't make the same distinction for feminine/female classes and activities. i'd say that's not just due to male discrimination, but also because boys are far more afraid of looking feminine than girls are afraid of looking masculine. i saw girls join the men's football teams, but i didn't see any boys join any women's team at all.

it may seem like they've got it set up so that there's a "men's basketball" and a "women's basketball," but these are just divisions, so that women don't end up playing against men and getting destroyed. if you're a woman you can play on the men's basketball team, and if you're a man you can play on the women's basketball team. it's illegal for them to try to stop you. you still have to try out and everything, but if you're objectively good enough they can't stop you. and here's where the sexism comes into play. they'll make a big deal about a man being in a women's locker room, playing among the women... but they don't care at all about a woman being in a men's locker room, playing among the men. two things here: 1) of course it's seen as unfair for a man to play in a women's league, and this shows that even feminists are aware that men are physically superior to women, despite their protestations. if women are just as good as men, then why is it unfair for a man to be in a women's league? this really twists them up. 2) this shows their fear of male sexuality, their belief that male sexuality is aggressive and violent. a man can't be in a women's locker room! that's dangerous! what if he goes wild and howls at the moon and starts ravishing all the women? yet they don't share this view with respect to women in men's locker rooms. in fact, they might apologize to the woman that she has to be in a locker room full of men. "i'm sorry that you have to deal with this, can i find you some accommodations elsewhere?" this shows the view, of everyone including feminists, that female sexuality is submissive, passive, and receptive... and male sexuality is aggressive, active, and expulsive. what does that tell us? it tells us that even feminists hold the same stereotypes about gender that everyone else does. it tells us that what they call "sexual objectification" is just normal sexuality for men and women, and they themselves believe it! they'll objectify themselves in front of men they're attracted to, and doing so will turn them on, instinctually. but they'll turn around and point to any other example of it, and call it objectification. why do they contradict themselves? because they're liars, not because they are confused. they aren't just unaware of their own hypocrisy. they know that their own sexuality is based on self-validation by men, but they have to point at sexual objectification because it's a tool for them to attain political power.

When I was in high school girls had more general fitness classes because boys tended to take a sport with a relevant athletics course attached. Girls were less likely to take a dedicated sport so those that still wanted some exercise took PE/fitness/etc instead.

shrug sign up for the weightlifting class. If you aren't a football player or a wrestler, you probably won't get in. It ain't right, but that's how it works.

It's pretty well accepted that women are more interested in general health and fitness, this is probably due to demand rather than sexism.
