Interesting that even in the article they only mention the possibility that passengers would prefer a female driver. The scenario of someone preferring male company never once comes up. Implications... unpleasant.

I would remove the gender select for men, and that should about even it out.

Clearly letting the customers discriminate based on gender isn't good enough, we need for the company to discriminate against the customers too! /s

And in response to a "what if it let you discriminate by race instead" suggestion:

I'm imagining it, and I see a world where minority drivers don't have to deal with virulent racists.

They're totally OK with letting customers (and drivers too, apparently) choose the race of the people they do business with. How long until they realize they're advocating for allowing white drivers to refuse service to non-whites?

Will they be allowing people to choose non ethnic minority drivers too, such as in places like Rotherham?

The recent Muslim rape epidemic of 1,400 children there has led to many customers requesting white drivers, and for good reason too seeing as not only was the taxi industry was directly linked to many of the crimes, but also almost none of the rapists have been arrested and the crimes was largely ignored and covered up by the local politicians and police.

I honestly do not see a problem with this. The article is a bit one sided though, but I don't think it is wrong that women can choose to have a female driver. Women who take taxis often do so so that they can get home after a night of partying without worrying about anything, and for women the only thing really to worry about is getting raped. If they can be more calm by having a female driver, I am not going to be against that.

I don't know if I'd really call this discrimination. The company provides a service. I sort of see this as someone requesting a male/female doctor when they go to a hospital or something.

You should be able to choose how comfortable you are when you purchase a service such as this. Now, of course, it is discrimination if the reasoning behind someone requesting a female driver is that they think all men rape...but in general I don't see anything wrong with the idea of being able to request a certain gender driver.

Interesting to read about that 'rape' arrest. So a driver is alleged to have climbed into the back seat, held her mouth with one hand, and then...undressed himself and her with the other hand? Amazing. I recall trying to have sex on the backseat with a girlfriend and it was almost impossible even when we were both doing our best, never mind when one of us was resisting. What was he driving, a station-waggen?

This doesn't seem like too big a deal. I'm guessing that the drivers don't have to undergo any vetting process. Taxi drivers (at least in the UK) have to have a criminal record check before they can get their license. These drivers could be anybody, and the scheme could attract some proper dickwads.

It could be a vulnerable situation. Just like I decide to not walk down dark alleys at night or walk around Bermondsey in a West Ham shirt on a Saturday afternoon, if I was a woman I don't think I'd be massively keen on getting a lift with a stranger who could fucking do me.
