I'm confused. Her description is very specific - the radio show, cowboy boots, moustache, etc - and it matches precisely this one man whose name is also Barry, the name she uses in the book. Are she and Random House actually maintaining that the name is fake, that the matched description is a coincidence? Isn't the damage to his reputation done already?

If I wrote a book saying "I was raped in 1989 by a man named Jimbo, a bus driver who lived at 123 Main St., had a prosthetic arm, a nazi tattoo, and wore an eyepatch," would I be able to get out of a libel suit by saying "just kidding, Jimbo isn't his real name. Apologies to the Jimbo at that address with that arm and that tattoo and that eye patch. What a coincidence!"

To be honest, I'd like to have her cooperate with police and get this person off the street.

The fact that there's a rapist still out there who could have attacked more women is bad enough. But the fact that with these details, whether their name is Barry or someone else, the person could be found fairly easily becomes a lot more disturbing.

Keeping quiet about it does nothing to help women who may be future victims of her rapist.

If she lied about it, fine, then tell everyone that it's a lie and use it as a fictional story for the reader.

Feminists in this situation don't seem to care enough to want a potential rapist kept away from other women he could rape.
