Part of his argument for women taking time off is that it could, inevitably, lead to a more productive workforce.

If this is true, then heres an option for a more productive workforce - only hire men.

None of the women I've worked with required time off every month, nor did I notice any monthly dip in their productivity or attitude. They were all very professional and competent, like everyone else was.

Now, maybe none of them were in that 20% that the article claims require time off. But it just seems strange to never encounter even one woman like this, despite having a diverse workplace.

The crazy thing is that if a guy said this, it would be perceived as, and would likely be, misogynistic as fuck.

Take this sentence: "Women shouldn't have to come in to work when they're menstruating."

Imagine a well-rounded radical feminist saying it into a bullhorn.

Now imagine a man with a beard and a Southern accent saying it.

They're two very different things, aren't they?

I will accept that women can be in pain and want to take the day off because they feel 'grotty', which is a great word by the way.

But what about when a man is in pain? What if I hurt my shoulder, do I get a free day off a month to boost my productivity? No?

Equal Rights needs to be EQUAL. That is what they are about. Not 'mostly equal' or 'kind of equal', EQUAL.

yeah.... the reasons for menstrual leave sounds a lot like reasons to discriminate against hiring females and very good reasons to pay men a bit more. Utter bullshit. trust me I have a periods all the time and they suck but they don't disable me to the point where missing work or being unprofessional is acceptable.

Sure. Make women even less productive and less reliable, and watch employers do anything and everything they can to minimize women's impact on their businesses, from not hiring them at all to not promoting them to positions of responsibility to not giving them the most critical or important projects - not because of some negative attitude towards women qua women, but for purely business-related reasons.

...that said, it's stupid that we still work 40 hour weeks (or more) after nearly a century of improvements in productivity, and that we are still expected to put our jobs first at all times and schedule our lives around them as if we were just slaves to employers as a class. Of course there are some jobs that require that level of commitment but flexibility for both men and women ought to be much more common than it is.
