I think it's ludicrous to deny that looks determine how we're perceived by others and that this halo effect (or the opposite phenomenon) affects how we prejudge that person (how we expect them to act) and how we interpret and interiorise their words (how charitable we are towards them). That's why Disney villains tend to be portrayed as ugly and why attractive people are considered confident and charismatic before they even open their mouths.

Taking your inquiry with full sincerity, let me answer you honestly.

The problem with the presumption that one study with a small sample size with very specific methodological constraints about what constitutes "looks" and "judge" being considered self-sufficient proof of anything is just the sort of topic which I, having a background in social science, find exhausting to even describe for the 100th time.

Taken as one data point out of 20 in a well-argued paper on the topic joined cautious, conservative theory by people who are used to doing that sort of work under qualified scrutiny, it would make for an interesting discussion. But this sub has not, I my experience, been that sort of setting.

This level of research was never intended to be the final word in black-or-white ideological discussions. Having spent half a lifetime around this sort of stuff in academic and professional settings, I know that it's incredibly preliminary, intended as fodder for further research and to progress our thinking, not end it. That is why it's made by academics and published for academics.

In fact studies about studies themselves have found that a lot of studies are, in fact, too flawed to tell us anything conclusively, which is probably better discussed in a classroom of disinterested observers than on a message board of people who are mostly just here to make anyone else feel stupid for not agreeing with them.

And so, I tend to skip these posts. At least the ones that are pure theory or pure anecdote are more straightforward to approach, if no more or less likely to actually go anywhere.

Idk if I’m blue pill or what but yeah I feel like it’s well known that if you’re attractive people will automatically take a liking to you. It’s simply biological bc it’s seen as a sign of health and always has been. I don’t understand why this is seen as a big deal though, it is what it is, you can’t change biology. Does this make me blackpilled

Because it's still a shitpost, but it requires more efforts to engage with. The researchers have found out the halo effect and that improving one's appearance helps to boost confidence. They did not find out or proposed that appearance = personality.
