I think the main reason nofap is that popular is because it's one of the few "self improvement" habits that doesn't have any external results, so you can feel like you're succeeding when you aren't actually doing anything to improve your life. It's the same meme tier as cold showers, placebo at best, distraction from actual self improvement activities at worst.

It's fucking hilarious reading what they say. Personally, I've tried it myself and I will say I definitely was more horny to the point where I started messaging more girls on dating apps, out of sheer desperation to fuck.

It didn't make me a better person, or discipline me, or give me superpowers, or change any aspect of my life. I was just more horny and more desperate to have a sexual outlet, which forcing myself to interact with people I didn't even want to talk to get laid.

I suppose if you see that as a positive then sure. But I personally have zero intention of playing the dating game these days. I am quite happy with how I am now. Although I do get lonely on the odd occasion.

I have always done nofap before some big finals in the school to get that extra motivation. It's also nice to take breaks sometimes, I hate being dependent on anything. It definitely has some effects on you, just not big enough to change your life. I think I can do this month just fine.
