You left out how many children.

In CA they use the Dissomaster program to determine guideline support and 99.9% of the time the judge goes with that number. They plug in income & expenses as well as % of custody and it spits out a number. Usually the only way to get more or less is if there is a significant change in one of those numbers. I was paying an average of $400 a month per child (I had 2) and this was with me being employed and her being unemployed and we had 50/50 custody. She would constantly ask for more and I would always refuse. But she never took me to court because she knew she wouldn’t be granted more by the court because there was no significant changes in those numbers.

The court maintains continuing jurisdiction over the children until they reach majority and child support is always subject to modification. Don’t pay your kids anything additional until the court orders it because you won’t get credit for it.

Check with your lawyer to see what your kids are entitled to receive from you, if it is more than you’re paying now - you will probably lose so there’s not really much need to fight unless you’re going to go for custody or something that will reduce your obligation. You can enter into an agreed order and save the fighting.

talk to a lawyer and be ready to fight for more custody (ask your lawyer if you want her to know you’ll ask for more if she takes you to court).

Does your JAG office help with this? I would also argue you took all the debt for a lower child care payment and that counted as a form of lump sum. If she wants to change the deal you should ask her to take on some of the debt.

Most states use a calculator for child support. I would assume your initial divorce used the same. If not...you may end up paying more or less. Her healthcare is her problem, has zero to do with child support. Don't try to negotiate anything, let the court handle it.
