Get a cheap one to do it, usually 1-2k would cover it all.

If you're near Houston I know one you could get to do it for you.

Look into divorce mediators. They work for both of you and guide you through a bunch of questions and discussions. We spent something like $4k total. The divorce attorney that I spoke with wanted $5k to start and they'd come back for more after that was spent. And then the wife would have needed her own $5k+ attorney or it wouldn't have been fair and the judge could refuse the results.

If you're both sane, calm people who are just done and you don't want to hurt each other, you can save a buncha money. I was much happier giving half of that $10k bill to the ex rather than to a lawyer.

An attorney can only represent one party. Do not sign an agreement without consulting an attorney that is looking after your best interests.

I am in Texas and started the process in Feb. I researched mediators but they cost as much as a lawyer. Found a great lawyer for 2K. We are doing an uncontested divorce. I paid the retainer so she represents me. So far, stbx and I are talking and agreeing to everything. 50/50 custody. Selling house.

Man, I am already 15k in and we just got our 50/50 temporary custodial agreement drafted. We also have our financial disclosures ready to go. I'm thinking it's going to cost me at least another 5k just to divide the debt. That's all we have, debt!!! Lol! And I have to pay 20 grand to get 50 percent of it, but actually that's not a bad price because it would have been mine to deal with 100 percent if we stayed married.
