TL;DR - I converted to Christianity a few years ago and my ideas about society, family and culture have shifted pretty drastically. Wife identifies as a member of the LGBTQ community. She says it’s a dealbreaker and wants to separate/divorce. 14 years married, one child and own a home together.

Longer version: Basically, I believe in traditional marriage and traditional gender assignment, and traditional masculinity/femininity. I’m not a hardcore conservative about it, and I realize that not everyone fits that mold and believe that we should love others whether they live by religious values or secular values.

She believes that ideas around traditional marriage and gender are harmful because they cause people to exclude others. We had a difficult conversation about this and she says my position is a “dealbreaker” for her because she doesn’t feel safe due to trauma around her orientation and identity.

I stayed calm and firm in my beliefs during the conversation, and the result is that she wants to separate. She needs to be true to herself and I respect that. So do I. I don’t blame her for feeling this way, but she blames me and is accusing me of being selfish and closed minded.

I never intended to become the person I am today. In fact I was an atheist for 30 years. Either way, here I am and I have to follow this path. It’s very hard to walk.

What I really want is for her to be converted and for our family to live in faith together, but i don’t think that is possible.

Anyone been through something similar?
