I am finally over with my divorce and just want to share.

I had some posts in this reddit under another account as the divorce was in consideration and then in progress, but that account is long lost. I have been lurking here for a few years.

I'm 46, my ex is 36, our only son is almost 6. We slowly grew apart after he was born, and January this year she announced it's time to part ways (and if she wouldn't beat me to it, I'd probably come up with the same proposal within a week or two, I've been discussing it with my therapist).

We agreed on how we split the house - I find something else in the vicinity, she stays and buys me out (our equity was EUR 360k, so I got 180k), we pay y property purchase tax 50/50.

We agreed on how we split the kid - 50/50, I'm Sunday till mid Wednesday, she's mid Wednesday till Saturday, equal rights and responsibilities.

We agreed on how we split stuff - since I move out, I take whatever I need; plus I get our 12 years old Kia.

Divorce was quite quick and simple since we had no arguments to resolve; we ended up with no alimony, no child support, no pension magic.

The apartment I now have was built in 1950s, it's dirty, has some strange smells, needs a repaint and quite some fixing. Even that, I'm barely able to afford, its price is half a million Euro (apparently it's 586,000 USD nowadays). But I've fixed and painted two rooms, and I'm on my way to paint a wall "as a Creeper from Minecraft" as per my son's request, and I think it's liveable, and it's a nice location 5 minutes of walk from my son's school.

My ex has already found some guy, an ex-colleague of hers; they went on a vacation together this summer. I don't plan to date yet, too tired and somewhat disappointed in women.

But the most important thing, it's done. We share no other business together except for our son. We are separate, it's done; now I can work on making my life better.
