It makes a big difference if you can quit or take a sabbatical for a year.

1) Straight away you can put 0 as your current income which forces your wife's lawyer to go through discovery. There are at least 2 more steps before they can attempt to impute your income. Only 2% cases go through forced disclosure so odds are your wife's lawyer will try to negotiate a lower amount

2) Not disclosing assets or declaring low value of asset is lot more believable with zero income

3) You have a much better argument to impute your wife's income based on her qualifications if you are not working

4) Average 3 year incomes used by certain states will be 30% lower if you current year income is 0

I would be wary of what your lawyer (or other people) says. They are worried about you paying their fees and don't care how much you have to fork out to your ex

It does make sense to reduce your income as long as it passes the straight face test. If you're working 60 hours a week and Making 80k, and reduce your hours to 40 hours making 50k, I'd say that passes the straight face test. You can easily argue that 40 hours is normal and 60 hours can't be sustained long term and was affecting your health. I would absolutely cut back on your income.

No. Just don't work extra, take a step back and enjoy life for a bit... Also you might push your wife to earn more.

Side note, start pulling extra money out when you go to the ATM, or getting cash back on debt card purchases... An extra few grand in cash for an emergency can be a game changer.

Hmm…I guess depends on your ability to ‘turn it on’ afterwards, or if it has a big impact on your quality of life to get a lower paid position
