Financial advice in divorce.. tricky situation

My wife and I have been married for nearly 3 years (together for 10) and decided on a getting a divorce after a long time of unhappiness and incompatibility. We have no kids, but live together in a nice house with a lot of property and a couple of pets. This is where things get tricky.. The house was purchased in my wife’s name before we were married.. we married after about a year of living in the house together. The house has been heavily renovated over the last couple years with thousands of dollars put into it. Admittedly, wife has put a significant more amount of money into the house then I have. That being said, I still have put potentially thousands into the house when you account for mortgage payments, renovation, in addition to the hundreds of hours of labor I’ve put into it. Wife wants to keep the house. I want to move out, but I want to be bought out. I think I should receive some compensation for what I’ve put into this place, even if I haven’t put as much as her into it... after all, I didn’t get married thinking I was gonna move out after a couple years... we both would prefer to settle without lawyers... but the more we discuss the money issue the more it seems impossible to not get lawyers involved. I want to leave this situation financially secure and not completely screwed. She wants to keep the house, but isn’t willing to pay me what she considers “exuberant” amounts of money. I think I probably deserve more than a few thousands dollars but I’m just at such a loss as to what to do.. what y’all think? Is it possible to go forward without a lawyer? Has anyone seen or went through a similar situation?
