I finished the process in Cook County a few months ago. If you want to fight for 50/50 custody (which I have), and she disagrees, you must have the capability to take care of them. For example, do you travel a lot for work? Who would take of them when you have work trips? And it can get ugly regarding what you know about your children. Do you know their favorite toys, colors, etc. Who are their doctors? Teachers? Do the doctors and teachers know you? If you can, find out what most interests her and use that as leverage in the settlement negotiations. You want a settlement, not trial. A SAHM is in a great position to screw you at trial, so play nice and play the long game.

Child custody decisions are made based on the "best interests of the child" standard.
So in case of conflict, you will have to prove your implication in the child life(receipt...) & not considered only ab ATM machine.

I haven't had any experience in Cook County, IL, But I've had experience with her filing for divorce- get the best hardest working lawyer you can afford cause in 21 days after she serves you the papers is when your lawyer has to make acknowledgement of being your attorney. You might want to hurry getting consults under your belt to find the best one for you. And watch your words when dealing with her, better yet start recording conversations when dealing with her cause she could play the "abusive husband" card when in fact it's not true at all.

Take out new credit accounts.

Get a HELOC.

Beg from friends and family.

A good lawyer who will fight for you is the difference between no custody and full custody.
