I could use some advice from anyone who’s been through something like this.

My wife and I are divorcing in Texas. Thankfully, it’s not ugly, yet, we’ve actually agreed on pretty much everything. We’re going to sell the house and split the equity. She’s agreed that I’ll have full custody (sole managing conservatorship), and in exchange I won’t ask for child support or will take whatever the minimum is that a judge would approve. Kids are 15 and 11, both want to live with me, not her.

The big goal here is to keep things simple and not spend a ton of money on lawyers. From what I’ve read, an agreed (uncontested) divorce is the way to go, but I’m wondering how realistic it is for the court to approve zero or minimal child support when both parents agree. Has anyone actually gotten that approved?

Also, for those who’ve done this without a big legal bill — did you do it yourself with the Texas forms, or still hire an attorney just to draft/review the decree? Any pitfalls I should watch out for with the house sale or the custody language?

If you’ve been down this road, I’d really appreciate hearing what worked for you and what you wish you’d done differently.
