There are various levels of professionals that become involved depending on the severity of the conflict between you and your ex.

Could be a GAL, or as in depth as a custody evaluation, but both are similar in determining the recommended custody arrangement.

Both will sit down with you and your ex in your house and observe you and the child interact, observe what environments you expose the child to and evaluate the relationship you have with the child. Since the child is so young, its unlikely that any significant interview of them will be conducted.

Probably a Guardian ad Litem. The GAL makes the custody recommendation to the judge, and unless it's challenged, the judge accepts the recommendation at face value.

A custody expert will determine what is in the "best interests of the child" - this is a murky standard, at best. Each parent's careers and jobs, though, are typically strong grounds for allowing a relocation. So basically, you have to line up the pros and cons of the relocation for the child. Also, if she's accepting this job for the purpose of spurring relocation by giving up a decent job in your current jurisdiction, you need to demonstrate that she has an ulterior motive (e.g. another relationship, just changing jobs for the purpose of custody). On your positives side, extended family, etc. Are you in the position to be the primary caregiver? That will be huge.

If you can be the one responsible for the expert's fees, and you can afford it, do it. It doesn't matter but it does.

I went through a custody eval. For me it was one on one interviews, an interview with the STBXW, interviews with me and the kids, kids alone, and home visits to both of our houses.

Of course your little brother be won’t have solo interviews, but you’ll most likely be observed with the child at home and probably in another setting (office, for instance)

It was expensive as hell, but I have primary custody of my boys because of it.

Mine was a bunch of interviews and home visits. Expensive, but well worth it — the evaluator’s recommendations led to my award of primary custody.

My evaluator was a PhD psychologist who both attorneys agreed upon. She completely nailed both of us, psychological profile-wise. Very smart woman, and she and the process were a little intimidating. She wrote a full report that included all of her observations and recommendations. That set the stage for mediation. I stuck to my guns and “won”.

Just a heads up, and I'll preface this with 50/50 custody is totally worth it, but this is going to cost you a fuck ton of money. Minimum of $10k and more likely 20-25k.
