One thing I have learned is that you really get to meet the woman you married, the day the divorce process starts up. They will play you, and your sense of doing the right thing, against you.

There are so many things with modern divorce and the Family Courts that manage all of this.

In reality, any "Gift" should be counted as a kind of property transfer. Not just free money, and then have the court come in and take more like the earlier amounts didn't exist.

It's too bad you didn't give her $15,001. Then it would be considered taxable and you could convince her to stop fighting you on it or she'll have to lose a good chunk of it

Why would it be considered a gift though? I don't understand, I do pay voluntarily while I wait for our judgement to be signed off on. Our agreement states that there are no arrears owed, etc. I'm supposed to pay this month's support by today but I haven't because she's been dragging her feet for months on adjusting child support based on her new income. I'll probably hand her the checks with the old amounts on them tonight but fuck I don't know what the consequences are if I don't pay this month while I wait for her to agree to what is just the fucking law AND our agreement.

Yeah I fell for a bit of that myself. My lawyer told me to give her a bit of money for expenses before the settlement. I did. Probably I should have just subtracted that amount from the final settlement. But by then I was mentally exhausted I just wanted it over.
