I am heading towards a divorce after being married for five years as well. It is definitely been a hard pill to swallow. Mine was also emotionally abusive and put me through a lot of stress.

Its a short term marriage, guessing there is not much marital property. Refinance the home and make sure equity is zero. Open a bank account with a local bank in another state, transfer home equity loan and whatever you have earned into that bank. Keep small amount in your joint bank account.

When you are asked to disclose financial assets, declare only the joint bank account. Its as simple as that. Do not respond to any silly questions from her lawyer, keep story straight that your joint bank account is all you have, let them try to prove otherwise

First. Don’t say shit. Get the lawyer and have a plan with them. - take any spare keys for your car and have them where you only know. - I would open a new bank account and then take action on what lawyer says- move 50%. -I would make sure I had a bout $1000 in cash handy for emergencies only where you know. -I would reduce spending limits on cards if you can or close an account you share. -change all your passwords. -anything valuable or family heirloom get it out of the house slowly into storage or with family.

Plan for the worst and be ready to record. Spiteful abusive spouses like to drain accounts, make false accusations, destroy your items, call your work, etc etc.

Get a key vault, I prefer Keepass. Use a strong password that you won't forget, do not write it down anywhere. Take this password to your grave.

Open a new Gmail account. Save the password in key vault. Save the Keepass database into Google Drive.

Important: Remove her name from any credit cards in your name. Remove your name from any credit cards in her name. (Credit cards accounts aren't shared, that's a myth).

Once you file for divorce and she is served immediately update all online bank, brokerage, utilities, email, social media, or subscription accounts.

Cancel any credit card numbers in your name and get new ones issued (don't close the account, just get new numbers).

The day the divorce petitionis file access all online financial accounts and export to PDF the transaction logs for the last 3 years, this can be used as proof of spending as well as proof of the account balances on the date of filing.
