I’ve been documenting heavily for months (one-party consent state). My documentation logs/audios shows a consistent pattern of me handling 90% of parenting/household duties while she was largely absent or disengaged since early Feb.

Now that we are deep in the legal process, she has suddenly pivoted. She’s claiming financial abuse because of a one-time budget issue (first time ever) and has suddenly started playing "Super Mom"—cooking, keeping the kids in her space, and trying to flip the narrative that I’m the one gatekeeping.

For those who have gone through this: How did this "sudden change in behavior" look to the judge/GAL? Did your long-term logs hold up against her recent 2-week performance-long term performance ? I'm worried the court will only see her "new" version of reality.

Anyone receiving my backed evidence would have a clear picture. I’m prepared to go to trial.

Well man, if you want me to be completely honest with you, I am kind of in the same boat, but also a different boat haha. My wife and I were married for 16 years. She cheated on me but I had to find that out on my own. I learned she was going to do a smear campaign against me. She even tried to silver bullet me in a way. But I filed first and put an end to that pretty quick. I have also been logging and recording every interaction ive had with either my wife or child since this has happened. I cannot tell you how much evidence I have been able to get in just a month and a half. Where we differ though - I have always been the one to do every single chore in our large 5000sqft house, from top to bottom, inside and outside. I tend to the lawn and landscaping. I also take care of our 7 rescue animals by myself. I have more or less been a house slave so that my wife and child could live the good life and go out and have fun. We have an old dog (16) that has bad hips and gets stuck on the ground, cant move, can't get up or make it to the rest room. She pees everywhere in her sleep. I cannot go on vacations with them or leave the house for more than 2 hours at a time because of this. In her smear campaign my stbxw is trying to use this as an excuse to say im a do nothing dad more or less. Which is just completely untrue. But due to this, since this has happened, in addition to everything I do at home, I am now spending every waking second with our kid and doing substantially more than my ex wife is doing for our child. I was worried like you, but in the opposite way. That even if I showed on top of everything I was doing before, that now I am doing literally everything all together and providing all of our child's care as well, that it wouldnt be enough. But again, from what ive heard, the present matters much more than the past and if you show youre a good parent and are trying to have an active role in your child's life, that's pretty much what they want to see. I am doing it for genuine reasons. Im not sure about your wife. If shes doing it and is being fake, im sure the truth will come out eventually. A performer can only put on a show for so long before they go back to being who they really are. I hope for you everything works out. Good luck to you.

Financial abuse is something that has been pushed because we're looking for ways to become victims. When you can't find 'classic' abuse (no one is physically striking you, verbally abusive, or using sexual coercion) you have to invent new forms of abuse to maintain your victim status.

Enter financial abuse. Where does financial abuse? Well that's the great thing. It's whatever we decided to be. Did you ask to buy a Louis Vuitton bag and he said no, that's financial abuse. Did he make more money than you and you made less, and you asked for something? You said we can't afford it. Well that's a financial abuse. Did you make more money than him, but he said that just because you make more money you can't call all the shots, well that's financial abuse.

There are actual legitimate cases, where one partner controls all the money, and only gives out piecemeal portions to the other partner in order to control them. But those are very rare.

The other problem with financial abuse is it depends on the individual couple, not the absolute circumstances. I know a couple that loves each other very much. But the wife has spending problems. She has a debit Visa that they load up each week with a certain amount of money. And that's all she gets for the week. All of the other needs for the family: groceries, bills, rent, school activity, gas, etc. That's all covered in paid for by the man. And everything is communal, if she asks for something, they'll work out how to make it happen. But for her day-to-day money it's locked to her debit Visa card. And that's something you both have agreed to and they both think as a great idea to keep her spending under control.

But God help them, for some reason they end up getting divorced, that could look horrible.

Fortunately, the other thing about financial abuse is that it doesn't matter. The courts don't care, it's still going to be 50/50 split of all communal assets and debt, 50/50 child custody and residency( which you have to fight for), and whatever the state calculators say for spousal support and child support. The thing about no fault divorce is it actually is no fault.

As others have pointed out she could cheat on you, cuck you, be physically abusive, mentally abusive, Have a drug problem, and she's still going to get that same 50/50 deal.

Talk to your attorney, follow their advice. But don't get too drawn into things. In the end. The system is fundamentally broken, but the system is what it is.
