You might be surprised that filing jointly may not save you much. For divorce purposes you filed so you need to separate and that includes the way you file taxes. Big mistake not to do it. Once you file for divorce treat it as a business transaction where you cannot trust the partner. And bro..it is over! She filed for divorce. If file separately you will see in the final divorce decree it will state she is liable for her taxes and you yours. So if she has something lurking or a liability pop up you won’t get hurt unless your name is on it. Same goes for the tax return!

When you file jointly, you're both responsible for everything on that return, which means if she has income she didn't report, deductions she inflated, or anything else that triggers an audit or penalties, you're on the hook for it too. That's called joint and several liability, and it's a massive risk when you're filing with someone who's already on their way out and may not have your best interests in mind.
