I didn't do this. But I wish I had.

I had too much faith in the judge. I brought evidence to court to show that my STBX had worked in the past. I had tax records and bank statements. She wasn't sick or disabled. She was still able to work in her field. But she quit her job before the divorce and came to court claiming to be unemployed and unemployable.

I showed my evidence and ASSUMED (ha!) the judge would see through her bullshit.

But, nope, he imputed minimum wage to her despite that she previously earned more than 100k a year for a few years in a row.

I realize it's not up to the judge to do your investigations for you. But, c'mon, man, I thought the evidence spoke for itself. I didn't consider a vocational review until it was too late. And costing 3, 4, or 5k? That's ridiculous. Can you shop around for one that will give you the most favorable outcome? Is that possible?

Yes, I’ve done it. Cost is inline with mine in CA. The vocational evaluator will review her resume, interview her, and do market analysis to determine range of salary and/or matching job opportunities (if not working or under employed).

It should hold up in court and allows you to impute her income meaning even if she doesn’t make that amount all support calculations will be based off of it bc she’s capable of making it but chooses not to. This is big if she’s underemployed and refusing to work or work to her full potential. My ex is 2X her current income. She’s not happy. :-)

I might need to go that route too with my STBX. My lawyer is going to try to negotiate with hers because it would be a waste of time and money, but if we can't get the numbers where we think they should be, I'll request one. I'm in the Bay Area too, and $3.5-4K is what I've been told. If it could result in significant alimony savings, you'll make that money back soon.

Is this an alimony thing or a child support thing? If it's alimony - meh, doubt it'll be worth it if you're looking at temporary or lump sum. Child support or permanent alimony - probably a good use of resources.

I did a vocational study and cost $6.5k. Not sure if it will help. I have heard it can but is hit or miss depending on judge.

I don't have any experience with a vocational evaluation, but during my divorce my lawyer and I discussed getting one but decided to request that the judge considered my ex capable of making 75% of the average for her profession in our state. Well, it ended up that the judge basically said I am the man and the one responsible for working, not her (even though she has the capability to earn more than me). Glad we didn't spend the money on the vocational evaluation at that point.
