Suicide intent data from 5212 participants was included in the analysis. A significant association between suicide intent and gender was found, where ‘Serious Suicide Attempts’ (SSA) were rated significantly more frequently in males than females (p < .001). There was a statistically significant gender difference in intent and age groups (p < .001) and between countries (p < .001). Furthermore, within the most utilised method, intentional drug overdose, ‘Serious Suicide Attempt’ (SSA) was rated significantly more often for males than females (p < .005).

Method choice could be affected by (internalized) misandry, including preconceived notions about how a man should exist that stem from societal expectations and gender norms, and (enforced) conformity to societal ideals, even when it's detrimental to or devalues men.

Guns are used as a scapegoat in these conversations. "use more lethal methods like guns" so explain Canada, Europe, and Australia where guns are *not as widely available but the sex gap in death by suicide still exists.

Poisoning by Drugs: 7.2% (Male) vs 3.4% (Female)

Poisoning by Other Means: 28.2% (Male) vs 12.2% (Female)

Sharp Object: 8.6% (Male) vs 2.5% (Female)

Moving Object (Lying in front of): 70.8% (Male) vs 33.3% (Female)

Firearms: 78.8% (Male) vs 50.0% (Female)

Jumping: 55.0% (Male) vs 43.7% (Female)

Other Methods: 28.6% (Male) vs 21.4% (Female)

Drowning: 61.1% (Male) vs 65.6% (Female) (Note: This is the only method where female fatality was slightly higher, though not statistically significant)

Using female attempt rates to minimize the severity of male completed suicides is a flawed (and stupid) comparison:

Completed suicide is irreversible, and some cases (like single-vehicle crashes) might even be misclassified as accidents, potentially hiding the true number. Attempts, while extremely serious, fundamentally differ because they allow for survival.
Attempt statistics are complex. They can count multiple non-fatal acts per person, rely heavily on self-reporting (which can have gender biases), and may sometimes include severe self-harm where the intent wasn't necessarily death. Completed suicides are single, fatal events, often with less clear reporting of intent.

A more accurate explanation is that men often die by suicide at higher rates because they generally possess a stronger intent to die during the act itself. This higher intent is frequently cited as the primary reason for the increased fatality, not merely the method chosen.

While the method contributes, reducing this tragedy to "men just choose more violent methods" is dishonest and ignorant, especially since higher male suicide fatality is a worldwide reality, yet the common focus on firearms as the method is an America-centric bias. Access to firearms varies drastically; obtaining one is extremely challenging in countries like Japan, which still face high suicide rates despite strict gun control.

This is statistically not true. Also, as a Healthcare worker, SI is way out of our scope of care (unless you're a psychologist) so that's totally irrelevant.
