How should a person deal with their own socialization? Throughout history, a lot of behavior was(and still is depending on the place) encouraged that would now be considered unacceptable. Is socialization an excuse for that behavior? Does that depend on if comes from society, or your immediate family?

The reason I'm bringing this up, is because I've seen a lot women explain why they don't approach men, by saying they were socialized not to. First of all, I wonder where exactly that came from. Was is their mother? Second of all, what if a man was not socialized to approach women?

The standard advice he would get, is to change that about himself. I think this implies the effects of socialization can, and in some cases, should be changed. On what basis though is some socialization acceptable, but others in need of changing?
