they have done a legit study where a man and a women of ‘average attractiveness’ went to bars and point-blank asked people of the opposite sex if they wanted to bang. surprise surprise, the random men said yes more than the random women. you could see that, and this data, as a problem with the women’s threshold being too high or as the men’s being too low.

it’s also worth noting that there are a lot of risks for women (and men! they should really be more careful!) when meeting up with a stranger, from a bar or an app. I’m not on tinder but I’d set the threshold pretty high for that reason alone, only the top 1% would be worth the risk. and everyone’s top 1% is different, I personally prefer a shy, funny dude on the shorter side, like the one I’ve been dating for years.

but again, I’m not on tinder/not interested in casual sex (if I wasn’t already dating), and most women aren’t. hookups don’t get me off like banging someone I care about and who cares about me. It’s also not worth the risk 99% of the time.

either way, there’s plenty of evidence to say that women are less interested in random hookups/casual sex than men, so on a hook-up app like tinder that’s already got more male users, that’s just supply and demand my friend. no surprise there.

Thank you for the reply, I appreciate it a lot. I somehow forgot that women's pickyness is also due to having generally less interest in casual sex and a minority of men being dangerous.

A sample size of 27 collected in an arbitrary way with huge caveats (that the author admittedly did know already so good on them for self awareness) is NOT a study. It is entertainment.

If you’re looking for interesting dating data, I think OKCupid actually has a data science division and blog posts based on data. Here’s an example (old) blog post showing that for OKCupid users more singles would rather be pissed on than support Trump:

[–]yutyrannus_huali[S] 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not as big a deal-breaker as Denmark over Greenland though.

Thanks!

[–]Moldy_Gecko0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Just so you know, a sample size of 27 is all that is needed to get a 97% or so accuracy. Might be 95%, I didn't like stats class. However, you're right about the sample pool. It isn't generalized enough as it only focuses on a group of people that are more likely to meet strangers.

[–]wooshoofoo1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Uh... it all depends on the sample size relative to the total population and it’s pretty obvious Tinder’s population is pretty large. Where did you get 97% out of?

[–]Moldy_Gecko0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Actually, it doesn't. But I'll go look it up sometime today and give you a reply.

[–]likethemonkey2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A lot of other folks here are making great points. I just want to highlight the part that tells you this data is insignificant.

I have to assume that in general females find the same men attractive. I think this is the biggest flaw in this analysis, but currently there is no other way to analyze the data.

"I can't think of another way of doing this" neither instills confidence nor validates the information.

In case this needs to be stated, women do not find the same men attractive.

[–]Criticalthinking3467 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It’s not facts, and isn’t a good representative sample of the actual population. Tinder is a hook up app and therefore the findings aren’t applicable to any actual relationship

[–]ChaosQueeen3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

As a woman, I can confirm that everyone's ideal partner looks different, but the one thing we collectively seem to be into is effort. We are attracted to guys who go out of their way to do nice things. Like, taking the time to take several good pictures of themselves and write an interesting and funny description.

It's not all about looks. A group picture or blurry selfie with a fish is nothing compared to a creative picture of a guy with nice hair and facial hair, wearing a flattering outfit in front of a nice background (doesn't need to be anything special tho) with good lighting and nice camera perspective, even if they're on the same level of attractiveness.

[–]yutyrannus_huali[S] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That makes sense and is probably great advice. It shows a person value themselves. But isn't there also a kind of charisma to make it look like you put low effort into a profile? Like you're so good looking you look amazing in crappy pictures, or are too chill to care about typing errors, etc

[–]ontheavenue1231 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No... just no. I don’t know any woman who is turned on by typing errors or crappy pictures. I’m kind of flabbergasted by that statement.

[–]yutyrannus_huali[S] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, in some blogs for dating advice I've noticed a lot of very obvious typing errors that I could only assume was deliberate. My guess was that it makes you look less neurotic. But who knows.

Guy goes on picture-centric hookup app, finds that girls "like" pics of good-looking people.

Women are pickier than men, this has been well supported by studies in social psychology.

https://sci-hub.tw/http://dx.doi.org/10.1037/a0015300

However, women have less of a consensus than men on what is considered attractive. I think if you are an average looking guy, your looks on a scale of 1-10 will vary heavily to a lot of women, most women are going to think you are bellow average but there will be a good bit that will think you are attractive.

tldr; don't waste time with women who don't think you are attractive.

The finding that men show more consensus than women in attractiveness judgments suggests important differences in the constraints that men and women are likely to face in mating situations and the strategies they will tend to adopt in response. In particular, as consensus increases regarding which people are found attractive, the level of competition between individuals for mates is expected to increase (Buss & Barnes, 1986). Women, having less consensual preferences, and considered alongside their tendency to generally judge people as less attractive than men do, should be expected to encounter less competition from other women for the mates they find attractive. On the other hand, as men have much more consensual preference, men may find it necessary to invest more time and energy in attracting and then guarding their mates from other potential suitors, given that the mates they judge attractive are likely to be found attractive by many other men (Haselton & Gangestad, 2006).

Thank you for the long reply, it was very appreciated. I enjoyed learning about the women being less consensual part in particular.

[–]TheMadWoodcutter0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I'm mid 30's, average looking at best, and don't make all that much money and in the span of roughly 2 years of using tinder I slept with roughly 25 women, probably 75% of which were one night stands, and the others mostly being FWB for a while until I met my current wife (also on tinder).

Take from that what you will.

[–]yutyrannus_huali[S] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Thanks for the answer. So you're saying that in your experience the Red Pill's and Rollo Tomassi's statements about womens pickyness is either grossly exaggerated or flat out wrong?

[–]misiepatysie3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Red Pill's and Rollo Tomassi's statements about anything concerning womaen, dating and relationships is wrong.

[–]TheMadWoodcutter2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

There will always be a certain percentage of women who are primarily interested in looks and/or money. There is also a certain percentage of men who are only interested in looks and/or money.

The rest of us understand that an engaging personality and an open mind is a lot more fun in the long run.

Bottom line is that EVERYONE, men and women both, likes fantasizing about being with extremely attractive people, but the reality of the matter is that extremely attractive people rarely have pleasant personalities to go along with it.

It's simply not worth chasing after the top 10% when there's plenty of other perfectly attractive and frankly, far more interesting, human beings out there.

Edit: in other words, women are exactly as picky as men, and all that it takes to start seeing some success is to have an engaging personality, not be an asshole, and lower your standards just a bit.

[–]yutyrannus_huali[S] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I figured I would actively try to lessen and call out myself on my own focus and desires regarding the physical appearance- I would probably end up happier doing so.

Something interesting that I remember reading was about how the invention of the camera had a drastic effect on the way we think about others appearances and made us much more picky. For the first time ever it was possible to see a precise image of someones appearance and also compare it to others. Before that when you looked at someones appearance they were also moving, expressing emotions, being social with you etc.

[+]Dustin_Bromain-6 points-5 points-4 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Tinder is useless for any guy that isn’t incredibly attractive.
