I read a study once, sadly I do not have it anymore- but we often feel more contempt or envy most towards people we relate to. For example, by this idea, an incel would feel more contempt for his fellow incel for getting a girlfriend compared to a top celebrity. Some of the reason behind it is that we tend to surround ourselves with like-minded people, therefore, it can create some competition. Because of the perceived scarce competition I think this can create some animosity. Another reason can be the loss of solidarity in a group. Someone made a comment below that sometimes overweight/obese people may feel contempt towards someone who lost weight because they feel like they lost someone important to them. When the singer, Adele lost weight, some people felt like they lost a leader. Of course there are always exceptions to the rules. Sometimes people can be happy with others success, it just can be a little hard to feel happy for people when you are not happy yourself.

What do you think? Do you think some of this is true? Or do you think there is another explanation?

Incels don't want to not be incels. It's a cult, and leaving is a betrayal of that cult. It's why they have terms like fakecel, trucel, volcel and etc.

Misery loves company. It’s as simple as that. The entire redpill/blackpill movement is one giant cope for men on why they can’t get women. If a man in their movement goes out and actually gets a girlfriend it pretty much ruins all their talking points

For most people who identify as "incel" it's because they want to belong to a community.

We see incel communities as pits of despair and horrible, dark pits of misery where everyone is unhappy and hateful and cannot understand how anyone can live like this.

What we don't see are the perspectives of the incel, the person who feels rejected by society and has been told over and over and over that they're wrong, bad and need to do things to change themselves... but the incel forum or channel, those people will never tell him he's wrong for being unhappy. He won't have to explain why he hates women, he won't have to justify his dark thoughts or defend himself.

When you are suffering, you don't seek pleasure, you seek relief. There are distinct differences that would benefit us to remember, because these kinds of drives and motivations are what are behind a lot of human behavior.

A sense of community and identity are among the most massively important things we have in our lives, many studies have shown that these things have profound effects on our psyche, and this is why identity is such a huge issue, be it sexual identity, gender identity or cultural/ethnic identity.

Places that reinforce your identity (And you do have one, everyone does to some degree) will feel more appealing to you. On more extreme examples like with incels, their sense of identity is very compromised that even a community of miserable wretches will feel like their only escape from a nightmare world.

So when another incel then leaves that group, it shakes that sense of safety and identity to the core, it shows that the community can be taken away (by eeeevil females no less!) or that any one of them may suddenly "change" and that's akin to death. Losing identity is one of the scariest things we face as a species, it's why social rejection hurts people more than physical pain and why torture that involves stripping people of identity is considered a war crime.

To see one of their own leave isn't a cause for celebration, it's a cause for fear that everything they know may change at any moment and that they are all vulnerable to outside forces.
