Agreed. I don't know why people always say love should be unconditional. It's that kind of thinking that gets people (let's face it, women) into fucked up relationships!
My love is highly conditional.

Sure they can. I will never stop loving my children no matter what they do or who they become. But loving them and putting up with toxic behavior/abuse are two very different things.
I’d actually argue that allowing bad behavior is NOT loving them, it’s enabling them for the parents’ own purpose (guilt, avoiding doing the hard thing, etc).

I’d also agree you shouldn’t just automatically unconditionally love everyone you fall in love with. But for me it’s not something I can just turn off every time (although good gravy I wish I could). That’s why I’m ok with still loving them, just from waaaay over there.

Omg!! I love this!! I found that before I found this sub- I struggled with loving the memories I had of someone who in the past showed me beautiful parts of themself with their actions and words. However, because or whatever reasons, they slowly became just frankly rude and despondent. Begging for their time and affection was just - ridiculous. My self-respect wasn’t low enough to do that. But I can still love the beautiful memories I have of the good times of that person also while knowing that they’ve changed and aren’t good for me. This is like the perfect expression of that. 💗 Thanks for this! Edit: I need to frame this or something lol.

I’d counter those people by asking...what’s wrong with high standards??
What does it say about people’s opinion of you if they think you should “settle” or lower your standards to get someone low value? Only low value people seek other low value people.
