I want to start off by saying that I am not (currently) in the position where I'm worried about being a forever girlfriend--I've been with my boyfriend for less than a year, so I haven't been with him long enough to want to marry him yet. However, I would like to get married one day, whether it's to him or someone else. He has also mentioned that he wants to be married one day.

I know a couple in their mid-thirties, and I suspect the girl is square in the middle of Forever Girlfriend territory. The odd thing is, they seem to really love each other, and they are always doing things such as hiking trips and taking international vacations together. They don't officially live together, but she spends a lot of time at his place.

Whenever I hear that a woman is a Forever Girlfriend, I assume it must be because of one of two reasons:

1) The man is waiting around for his perfect dreamgirl. He likes what he has with his girlfriend, it's convenient and comfortable but he just feels like he can do better. He doesn't want to settle down with her and then immediately after marriage his Dreamgirl shows up and it's too late.

2) The man can't get over his ex. Maybe he's hoping she'll eventually come back around, and in the meantime he'll settle for his girlfriend. Or maybe he loved his ex so much he can't see himself ever loving someone else as much as he loved her. Since he knows he'll never have her again, he settles for his girlfriend, but doesn't love her enough to marry her. Maybe he even got with her just to spite the ex-girlfriend, or as a rebound, and now he's in deeper than he ever realized he'd be.

I'd like to hear some of your opinions on Forever Girlfriends:

  • What are some signs that a guy is likely to keep a Forever Girlfriend? Can these red flags be seen early in a relationship?

  • When should the desire for marriage be discussed in a relationship? Talk about it too early and you risk the guy assuming you want to marry him now (lol), but wait too long and he already has you pegged down as a Forever Girlfriend since you never brought up marriage.

  • What are some reasons guys will keep a Forever Girlfriend around without proposing/getting married, especially when it seems he loves her?
