Hello FDS,

I'm (27F) coming to the realisation that my brother (25) has grown into a spoiled, selfish manbaby. He moved abroad to be with his girlfriend in Norway a couple of years ago and they seemed to be doing well. He came back to England to visit about six months ago, met an old female friend with whom realised he might have a chance, then sent a text breaking it off with the Norwegian lady and never went back to her. He had been leading her on and talking about getting married, and though she was the main breadwinner (she worked in the music industry, he was a line cook) she was left with lots of debt, all his shit, and nowhere to live because they shared the rent. He moved back into our parents house to work part time and eat all their food.

That was appalling to me, that he would leave a woman he'd made promises to at the drop of a hat and leave her in the lurch like that. Since then he's only gone on to prove himself more self-centred and low value. He blows all of his wages on vain shit, designer clothes etc. and doesn't pay a penny to our parents for staying at their house. Recently he bought a puppy and then said he didn't want to look after it any more, leaving our mother to clean up after it etc.

Our mum was always super hard on me to the point where it destroyed our relationship, whereas she always coddled and made excuses for him growing up. She still does. I feel like he never had any respect for women or other people in general as a result.

Frankly I want him to get married off so he can be somebody else's problem, but sending him out into the dating world seems unethical. I feel bad for the next woman who takes a chance on him. What responsibility do we have for making sure our male relatives aren't selfish, immature, or unpleasant people? Is there any hope of him learning how to treat other people with respect as a grown adult? Can he be educated to consider the needs of others?

TL;DR: Can our LVM relatives and loved ones ever be shaped into HVM? Is it our responsibility as their female relatives to give them some tough love?
