I think that’s taking the saying a bit too literally. Just like most human interaction, there’s never a single rule that encompasses everything. I think, in this case, he probably didn’t mean it, it was just a joke to break the ice.
Otherwise, I say proceed if you want to, don’t proceed if you don’t want to. If you believe there’s more to it than a simple joke, there’s no point in proceeding.
