Have you looked into Planned Parenthood? Make sure you are seeing a female physician. Other than that, pay attention to what the reviews say. Poor bed side manner is far more alarming than a dodgy receptionist, so you have to weigh what the people are saying and whether it is a man or a woman saying it. Also do a Google search for the physicians name and look up reviews of them specifically.

Remember, you are in control of the situation when you arrive. If something makes you uncomfortable, speak up. If you want a female nurse in the room, tell them. Also before you arrive write a list of questions down on a piece of paper because in the moment it’s easy to get overwhelmed and forget to mention like asking about a rash, or a weird blister, or something innocuous.

So I got elective surgery (PRK) earlier this year and had to research docs. I’ve noticed that medical reviews online can be quite, well, heated. I’m not saying disregard them, but I personally try to read them and weight it out. People who are writing reviews for docs are often sick and vulnerable. They may not be having the best day or year, so inevitably you’re going to get tempers flaring.

Like other comment said, what are they upset about? Is it a red flag for you personally? For example the surgeon I settled on is kind, but he’s “business like” and doesn’t do fluffy bells and whistles I saw with other docs/facilities. The surgery was no muss no fuss, but you might hate that idea. You might want the fuss! Reviews can clue you in to what the details might be.

Do they have specifics or is their review “Terrible very unprofessional I WENT BLIND DO NOT GO!!!!!!!!!” I mean gosh, that’s awful but it’s also the internet. Check if they have actual names and detailed accounts of their experience. You can also try googling the docs name to see if there’s any malpractice or sketchy stuff.

And also, don’t discount your gut! If one place just feels wrong to you, give it a pass. I looked for the ophthalmologist and some of the docs I researched, their webpages seemed fine and reviews were good but I don’t know. I just didn’t “feel it”.

Check freetest.me

You might be eligible for free postal STD testing. Some of the tests are limited in what they screen for - so you might want to go for regular comprehensive screening, but its free & accessible, and you can order it right now.

Register with your local GP and dentist.

It can be such a hassle to get accepted as a patient with an NHS GP and Dentist. I know it is supposed to be easy and hassle free, but in my experience it's not. Register ahead of time, so that when you do need healthcare you can access it quickly.

Start getting smear tests.

Free on the NHS. You might not be old enough to be called in for a test by your GP, but no harm in requesting it.

HPV vaccine

Get vaccinated if you haven't already. It's free on the NHS if you're within a certain age range (I believe it's under 24s). Again, just request it. Once you have had HPV, the vaccine is far less effective.

Check your breasts yourself

You most likely won't be called in for mammograms for a long time. Regularly check your breasts yourself for lumps/bumps/changes in skin texture. Sign up to Coppa Feel for monthly text alerts, reminding you to check your boobs.

Contraception

Your GP can help with contraception. If you want to go to a specialist, the NHS clinics are good. As you say, it can be hit and miss depending on the location - but you might as well go & see for yourself. Also, they'll probably give you free information packs/leaflets and condoms.

To note, I am in no way bashing the NHS. The NHS can be really good, and I am so grateful to have access to affordable healthcare. But, they can also be really bad sometimes. Like, especially with women's health. So go, make use of the resources available on the NHS, get regular & early check ups. Always use protection. Educate yourself & be armed with knowledge.

This is a great question. I don't know how healthcare works in the UK, but I was also going to mention planned parenthood or an obgyn with good reviews.

Be assertive wherever you go. This is your health, so ask whatever you want, say whatever you need, say no if uncomfortable and if they don't respond the way you like leave or don't return (sounds like vetting right lol). Also, educate yourself on STDs and sexual health for your own benefit. It will scare you into making great your decisions for yourself lol.

I don’t have too much more to give than the other responses provided but hella proud of you for asking. I wish I did more of this kind question asking from a group of internet ladies like this sub.

-Write your questions down -Find female doctors -Research said doctors and pick one (you can always change. No loyalty unless deserved when it comes to your health!) -Book appointment (I stress before gyn visits due to some trauma so I make a day of it and block time to take myself to Thai or to the comic book shop!) -Pack questions/calendars to ask/track important things like vaccines, check ups, testing/routines -Wear clothes that make you feel pretty and comfortable as you usually have to get naked or mostly naked and I want things that make me smile and are easy to get in and out of. -Before leaving the office, ask for clear next steps -Then before leaving book the next visit or call in prescriptions. -Head to some self love activities and celebrate taking care of your body and your future

I read you live in the UK. The sexual health clinic there, particularly in London are great. There was one I went to in Southwark (I think) and the doctors and nurses were very good. It was scared but I felt free and open in talking to them. <3 NHS!!

I always take internet reviews with a hundred grains of salt. Some people lie or have a SUPER skewed view of what happened. I’ve seen them blame docs for missing a diagnosis when the client or patient refused diagnostics, blame docs for deaths when the client refused treatment, were angry they couldn’t get ER care at a regular GP practice, all kinds of crazy stuff.

Things were changed several years ago and now it is not recommended for women to go for their first vaginal exam till about the age of 25. Unless you're having a problem or you are having sex and need to be tested for STDs or get birth control I would not go. And I say this because even under the best circumstances it's just really fucking creepy and uncomfortable in many ways. I went my first time for PCOS at 17 as a virgin. A doctor's hand was NOT the first part of another human being I would have wanted in my body for the first time. Same goes for the first person to see me naked that wasn't my parents changing my diapers.

Not sure what exactly you mean? Your gynecologist should be able to order STI testing and do any evaluation you need.

You could also look into family practice as most family medicine doctors, NPs, or PAs can also do well woman exams and order the same testing (above). These doctors are more likely to know you as a human being and build rapport. Look for a smaller practice and maybe do an initial visit for just your yearly check-up if you're concerned about making sure it's a good fit/you feel comfortable.
