So after the Atlanta shootings, I was interested in reading up what determines a hate crime. I Googled it and landed on the Justice.Gov's page about hate crimes. They were giving examples of different scenarios that would qualify as hate crimes. This is what they have written for the gender scenario.

Scenario - Gender A woman took a handgun into a fitness center, entered the men’s locker room, and fired numerous shots. Two men were killed and one other man was injured in the shooting. The killer’s blog revealed that she had planned the attack for some time and harbored a deep hatred for men for rejecting her all of her life.

I know this is just supposed to be a hypothetical example and women can be violent and blah blah blah. But COME ON JUSTICE.GOV. WTF. I can't think of a single news story where something similar to that happened, but I can think of plenty of stories where it was the opposite (man attacking/killing women for being rejected sexually). It seems like it happens several times per year in the US.

In all but 2 of the other examples on the website (race, ethnicity, religion, disability) the person who would normally be considered the minority is attacked by the person who would normally be considered the majority. All except the gender example and the "color" example, where a group of black men attack a white man and an Asian man. Hmmm.

This made me really, really angry.

Update: I emailed them. This is what I said, I hope it was good:

I was disgusted to read the example provided for a gender based hate crime on your website (https://www.justice.gov/hatecrimes/learn-about-hate-crimes). Men of course can be victims of gender based hate crimes. But the example used is a terrifyingly common real-life nightmare for many women in this country. In 2009, a man walked into an LA Fitness and in just the manner described murdered three women and injured nine others. He cited his motive as being sexually & romantically rejected by women, just as your example scenario describes. Violence against women, committed by men who hate women and blame them for their own sexual or romantic shortcomings, is far from rare. Three women just died in Atlanta at the hands of male hate and rage about his own sexual shortcomings. I could name several other cases, several other precious female lives lost to male rage for the same pitiful "motive." However when searching news archives across the U.S. I was unable to find a single instance of a woman murdering a group of male strangers because she had been sexually rejected.

Do better. If you still insist for some unknown reason on making the woman the aggressor in your example, I encourage you to use a scenario that has actually happened in real life (if you can find one). The current example is an insult to the memories of all the women who have died at the hands of male rage and the delusional male belief that women somehow owe these men their time, attention, and bodies.
