The best study I've found is this one: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/315728247_The_Prevalence_of_False_Allegations_of_Rape_in_the_United_States_from_2006-2010 which cites FBI statistics which appear to have a good methodology.

The downside is that the data are over a decade old and from the pre-MeToo era. My guess would be that the problem is worse now.

A slightly different way to look at this is that 1 in 7 to 1 in 10 men are victims (along with 1 in 20 women):

This doesn't tell you what percentage of allegations are false but it does tell you that it's not rare or uncommon.

This includes allegations of child abuse and domestic violence, not just sexual assault. And this bypasses claims that go to the police. A similar victimization stat from the CDC is about 1 in 3. Which would imply that about every third claim (at least by women towards men) is false.

Honestly now it’s hard to know with so much of it going through social media posts and never being investigated thoroughly. Number is probably exponentially higher as it seems so many of those cases get successful defamation rulings

One thing that makes this hard is that false accusations may be dismissed without a formal finding that they are false. For example, a guy is accused of wrongdoing, there’s an investigation, and no evidence is found to support the accusation. So charges are dismissed based on that, but that doesn’t necessarily translate into a finding that the accusation was false.

Obviously there's a wikipedia page on this. Looking a little deeper at the source studies, though, there is an appalling lack of rigor. Several studies use the best guess of someone reading the case after the fact as a standard for "false accusation." Fully two-thirds of all sexual assaults are never reported to the police -- in the face of serious and deliberate bias in the studies sourced by wiki, it's clear this is an extremely rare occurrence -- at least compared to its prevalence in the discussion of sexual violence in this country.
