How can a guy protect himself against false accusations?

Try to identify manipulative personalities and general shittiness early on. Won't just help on the false accusations front, but also avoiding toxic relationship dynamics generally.

I consistently fail at this - so I'm probably not one to talk...

Always Be Recording. Annoying as it is, it can save you.

Recording video may be impossible (or just completely inappropriate), so record audio. I'm not saying 24/7, but in any potentially dangerous situation.

Modern mobile phones can record many hours of audio. Dump the files regularly on your computer/pendrive/hard drive and encrypt them for safety.

Check the laws in your country regarding recording. Usually, what's illegal is not the recording, but broadcasting/sharing the recorded material.

Also, keep the logs of any messaging system you use. I know cases where this has exonerated a man.

I wish I had some answers. All I can say is that, in the current climate, I couldn't be more grateful that my profession involves working from home (and did so long before the pandemic).

Apart from what was already said about recording interactions within the limits legally permitted in your jurisdiction, I think making sure that you have a trusted witness around whenever possible during potentially compromising situations would be good practice too.

This is gonna sound ridiculous, but with a diary.

Daily dated entry in a diary, one without rings(that shows a page was ripped out). *So the prosecution can't argue up you removed critical pages.

Make the entries about your days even if they are boring as hell.

A diary can be entered as evidence to help prove you weren't there.

(Remember that dumpster fire of a news cycle when Dr. Ford accused judge Kavanaugh of sexual assault, ... the dude showed up with his calendars(diaries) and it helped him a bit.)

Try being a good a nice person to almost everyone so if any false accusations appear, they are less likely to be believed.

Also, stay away from manipulative people.

Well, you won't have to worry about false accusations if you don't do hookups/ONS. Most of the stories about false accusations that I've heard involve a case where they really did have sex, and the lie was that it wasn't consensual when it really was. As far as I know there aren't many cases where the accusation was made about a complete stranger or even a friend. Maybe that has happened, but if you're not a hookup kind of guy I wouldn't really worry about it.

I must admit I don't have a lot of personal experience in this matter, but I have heard guys say things like "text her the next morning and ask her if she had a good time so you have it in writing". Beyond that, I really can't think of anything specific.

In general: Don’t have sex while drinking or while she has been drinking (or under the influence of any kind of substances). And ask for verbal consent.

Statistically: Studies show teenagers are the most likely to make false accusations of rape, in order to avoid getting in trouble with their parents. Sometimes the teenagers have nothing to do with it at all - the parents actually make the accusation.

Obviously it goes without saying that no adult men should be pursuing teenagers in any way. If you do, you frankly deserve it, as that would be statutory rape. But if you’re a teen who is asking, it may behoove you to wait on sex until you’re older.

A good rule of thumb may be to avoid sex with anyone living under their parents roof, as they may be more likely to have to live by their parents rules, and could have motivation for lying to avoid getting kicked out. This may also go for women with very religious parents, who could pressure them if they find out they are having sex in order to save face.

Another study shows that people with a past history of fraud are also more likely to commit false allegations. So avoid people with a criminal record.
Mental illness plays a role here. Avoid people with personality disorders (bi-polar, narcissistic, anti-social, schizoid, etc.).

So in light of the devastating harm of false accusations, what can a man do, if anything, to not only try and prevent this, but to, if not shield, try and mitigate some of these effects?

Well, ask for consent. At every single step of the way, even if it's cringy, even if it's kinda uncomfortable, ask. Any type of interaction or contact, you must ask, especially if you and the person you're with haven't been together very long (<6mo of dating). Let her make most of the advances (if you're uncomfortable - say so and stop).

Alternatively, you can just not have sex or interact with women (this is a joke).
