Interesting that he seems to be unable to find any emotionally healthy male role models. It probably has to do with it being almost a bad thing to have a male character that's not some sort of monster, coward, or incompetent idiot for the sake of making the female characters look even more superior.

Ben Sisko Most of the male cast of Lord of the Rings Luke Skywalker and Obi Wan Kenobi

It honestly seems like this guy is starving for positive male representation, yet seems like he's punishing himself for entertaining the idea such a thing should happen.

A behind the scene looks at what liberal spaces demands of men and how some have a problem with handling it.

Seriously, sounds like someone who believed all the lies of a cult that blame him for original sin, and is trying to make amends for wrongs he never did, amongst folks who think of men as demons.

The only move is to go out of there, for their own sanity.

Interesting read. I think it was intentional, but it's difficult to untangle how much of the hurt is caused by the people around him and how much is due to the story he has internalised.

In one of the last panels, I thought it was telling that he's unable to find male characters with positive emotional health. I recognised Shinji Ikari, Han Solo, Rincewind(?) in his lineup of negatives. But, for every Shinji, there is an Aang/Zuko or Stephen Universe. For every Han Solo, there is a Jean-Luc Picard. For every Will Hunting, a Sean Maguire. For every Gollum, a Gandalf. It seems more like he was drawn to the negative ones.

Perhaps wokeness is the prism through which he shines a negative light on himself, and by extension, men.

I also get the impression that the author learned to reinterpret every male character in a negative way. Han Solo specifically defies his statement about male characters "never improving" (he turns from an amoral mercenary to a self-sacrificing war hero), but the author still presents Solo as an example of a bad person.

This comic is a textbook example of what happens when a man with scrupulosity issues absorbs feminist ideology. Reminds me of the story Scott Aaronson told about how believing in feminist narratives wholeheartedly drove him to seek chemical castration. Incidentally, when Aaronson shared that story, there was a shitstorm of feminist journalists calling him an entitled asshole.

liberal spaces

I know many of these people call themselves liberal, but they have betrayed liberal values. Woke cultists is more like it.

play with fire, get burned. all this woke shit is pure toxic.

A good comics, but nothing new under the sun. People have been talking of the deleterious effects of feminist propaganda on men's mental health for years.

I mean, male privilege being compared to original sin was not for show. Feminism being compared to a cult wasn't a happenstance.

I'm not sure many people here are surprised to hear about a man exhibiting all the symptoms of having been taken in by a cult. Most probably have already heard the same thing or gone through it themselves.

Interesting though not for the reason the author intended.

I think it’s interesting how copy-paste therapeutic input responses are. Despite having next to nothing in common with this guy (different field, different political views, probably different back story, different life problems etc) the dialogue from the therapist in this comic could easily have been something one of the therapists’ I’ve gone to said, almost word for word at times (“what if you did it for yourself?” I’ve heard verbatim from at least 3 therapists). I experience a lot of contempt for people like this author who hold these people in high regard despite the obvious Wizard-of-Oz-scam the industry runs on.

And there’s also the narrative conceit of this whole comic, with the climax being him admitting to suicidal ideation. I get everyone’s struggle is different but really? It’s just part of life dude, there’s no way you can be as self-conscious as this author is and not eventually land on the idea that annihilating the self is the way out of self-consciousness induced anxiety.

Which leads to the real punchline which is that, his anxiety over being robbed of his livelihood and abandoned by his social network over a perceived social faux pas is actually pretty valid. Any situation could be read as bad if you shine the right light on it, the point of a social network is that they’re supposed to be a collection of people who like you as you are, not a clique of people that would hang you the second it became convenient. His anxiety is coming from a totally real place, given that it’s basically outright stated that everybody in his social environment is waiting to crush competitors at a moment’s notice. I’d be suicidal too if I went through everyday of my life thinking everything I ever did, and everybody I called a friend, could immediately be taken from me because because a highschool ex tweeted that I was ambiguously shady.

But as always, the role of therapy is to take those anxieties and de-tether them from their source, so the authors legitimate fear about the shallowness of his social sphere is buried into a navel-gazing project about how actually he’s a good, emotionally available male feminist. Because the best way to get out in front of any negative feedback is to expose yourself to a deeper layer of criticism first.

Good luck to whoever wrote this, hopefully you one day realize there’s like a whole world out there and not everybody is like that

It's hilariously depressing how he gaslights himself at every turn, refusing to see that his stress is the result of the woke culture he has immersed himself in which can turn on you at any moment, especially if you're a man.

He even worries that by complaining, he'd be giving ammunition to us losers who see this shit for what it is.
