Happened in 2016 and the full story is even better.

From Snopes:

...Menzio rebuffed an effort at small talk from the passenger next to him, according to the Washington Post: “Is Syracuse home? She asked. No, he replied curtly. He similarly deflected further questions. He appeared laser-focused — perhaps too laser-focused — on the task at hand, those strange scribblings.”

Following this interaction between Menzio and his seatmate, the plane remained on the tarmac for a lengthy period of time before being ordered to return to the gate, at which point the passenger next to Menzio — who had complained she felt ill — was escorted away. Shortly afterwards, Menzio was also escorted off the plane and informed by a gate agent that the woman sitting next to him had expressed concerns about his curt behavior and suspicious scribbling, suggesting he could perhaps be a terrorist.

Dude was on his way to a talk about a paper he had just published and was working on equations presumably in preparation for this important event. Then you have some bimbo sitting next to him trying to make small talk for which this based bastard has no time or interest, so he tells her to fuck off. Not in those words of course, but it hurt her feefees just as badly. So, she inconveniences EVERYONE on the flight, especially the dude she was obviously hitting on, and tries to ruin the dude's life.

I came across this story some time ago. Apparently, she thought the guy was working on some kind of bomb. Also, while not everyone takes a course on calculus, let alone one on differential equations, you'd have to be supremely stupid to react like she did. Oh, she got some praise for her stupidity, too, if I recall correctly.

They're usually considered hard to solve and complex, some of them don't have a "solution" (instead, we have to rely on aproximations), like the super important Navier-Stokes equation

Reminds me of a story dad told me when he was travelling. To this day i am not a natural mathematician and i wasn't fond of it in school because some of it was kind of daunting. But god damn its satisfying to be able to scribble some calculations down and get an answer about something. My grandfathers were both engineers and my dads father was always doing calculations.

I enjoy watching those videos on youtube about late night hosts interviewing people on the street. The difference I notice between non-Americans and Americans is that non-Americans will always say "I don't know" first then when encouraged to make a guess, guess correctly or almost correctly. Americans, will say the first thing that pops into their head, be it right or wrong (usually wrong).

The other thing I notice is 95% of the women are wrong (and half of those women answer so stupidly, if people needed to think in order to breathe, those people would have died already).

Obviously the videos are edited to show stupid. But one video has pointed out American education test results are now equivalent to 3^rd-world test results - and dropping in ranking every year.

Dr. Michio Kaku has recently said 100% of his doctoral students are non-Americans.
