A little backstory. I am 23 and I have got a Masters degree in Physics. After all the fast life at the University, I wanted to slow down a bit and relax. So, I came to this suburb and I am teaching physics to undergrads at a small community college. It doesn't pay much, but it is enough for me to last a month. Even though I am not fully utilizing my knowledge, I am happy, no hurry and very relaxed. I am living on a small rented room with my landlord downstairs (kind of like Arnold). I don't have to worry about the house repairs, or plumbing or shit -- that's the landloard's job.
But my parents insist me to get my ass off and start working hard, get a big job that pays a lot, buy a house, buy a car, sink in mortgage, then marry a girl and work even harder to feed her and then work even harder to feed the children who will come. Then I'll be called 'being successful in life.'
Seriously guys, what is the definition of success? Is not a life of content, a self fullfilling, relaxed, worry free life but a small job with less pay in a suburb considered 'being successful in life.' Or is it that a big house, with a Nissan, a wife, 2 kids, knee deep in mortgage, working like a dog to support them and a fat check every month with only maybe 10% to spend on myself considered successful life?
I don't want big paycheck, but my parents say that once I get married, I'll have enough motivation to earn big. Fuck that, I just want to work this 40 hours a week, come back home, watch movies, and play videogames until I fall asleep.
Edit: Arnold as in Hey Arnold.

The only reason for you to get a higher paying job should be to invest in your future. Get a higher paying job, but continue living like you do now. Acquire wealth and invest = early retirement
