I'm sure I'm going to get some grief here but bringing up the miscarriage was not a proportional response in the world of shit talking. Calling her fat after what she said was fine, but the miscarriage is what got him in real trouble.

To be clear, they'd still be pissed at him for only calling her fat since they're not used to men fighting back, but he'd have a much more defensible position.

Times have really changed.

Back in the 80's, a bunch of us were getting on the elevator. This overweight woman was hesitating to get on, and I stated loudly "it's ok. The elevator has a 9k weight limit."

Everyone but her just laughed. Never got in trouble. I was an insensitive fuck back then.

Try that today and I'd be lynched.
