For sure. I lost every fuck I had because of my hard shitty life. My life got better when I was nicer to people and found I had the opportunity to make most peoples day especially working in the hospital. It’s real sad how many people don’t have anyone to visit them and genuinely cherish a real conversation or just a quick how ya doing.

I don't get excited over arbitrary crap any more (like holidays). It's all just forced "happiness" that rarely ends in actual happiness. Nowadays I get excited when I start or finish a personal project. Make your own happiness on your own terms and don't worry so much about that arbitrary crap.

As an Atheist, Xmas is meaningless to me, and the forced socializing, often with people I'd prefer never to be in the same room with for the rest of my life.

Getting divorced this year gave me the opportunity to spend tonight with my pup, my whisky and make some dinner gleefully for one. This is the most relaxing Xmas eve I can remember in 25 years.

I'm with you; I despise forced social events. The best times I've ever had with friends have always been impromptu or last-minute get togethers. No Xmas party, NYE party, birthday party, wedding etc is in the top 50 of funnest nights I've ever had.

Read "The Subtle Art of Not Giving A Fuck" by Mark Manson, maybe it will give you some ideas (not necessarily absolutes for which to live your life). What you feel is indifference which isn't necessarily good. Not giving a fuck on irrelevant matters is good but you definitely do not what to be indifferent. Being indifferent is actually the opposite of not giving a fuck because you are giving a fuck about everything in order to drive you to be indifferent. The book goes into detail on that.

As men, we just have these natural tendencies to be a workhorse provider, to impress women, spread our seed, etc. Once you understand why it's all futile in the end, it's hard to care about anything. I have a cousin around your age and he is pretty optimistic. Has a girlfriend and spending lots of time with her. No job, doesn't work for a living tho, still trying to decide what to do with his life. Thinks he's going to Hollywood to be an actor or a fashion designer or something. It's not that I'm an anti social person as such but forced socializing makes me uncomfortable and more often than not I just want to GTFO. It's like a group of people just decided to be "nice" for a few days because it's that time of the year to be nice.

One thing that pisses me off is grown adults celebrating their birthdays like little kids. Making a big deal about it at work, throwing parties and all that.

Felt like that for 10 years now. I'm also twice your age. Seems like Christmas and Thanksgiving are all about showing off your family on social media. In the past it was always awkward because my brother and I are the oldest out of all our cousins and never married. Now it's not so bad because out of several younger cousins only two are married. One of the married one has kids with a beta af husband. The other one with kids is a single mom and her life is drama all the time. I don't feel so bad I'm not alone as far as being single, it never bothers me but being around family and having to answer those questions about do you have a girlfriend yet. It's exhausting. Last year I was too "sick" to participate in the family get together. This year I'm going to my brother's house. Next year I plan to go out of state for the week. So yeah long story short I don't care about the holidays anymore.

I just turned 40. For me, it hasn't mattered all that much for years. Mostly because I've had to work, so it was just another regular day for me.

FFW to this year, wife split in February, son lives with me...I actually tried to give him the best Christmas I could for his sake. For me, it was just another day...but without going to the office. Oh, and without the arguing with his mom. That was kind of nice for a change. :D
