This comes to mind. Not only because it describes the horrors of war so perfectly, but because its author Wilfred Owen, who died one week before World War I ended, dedicated this poem to Jessie Pope (later: "To a certain poetress..."), a female writer and warmonger who was famous at that time for writing pathetic pieces that were meant to encourage young men to become part of the meat grinder.

Remember, that was the time of the british "feather girls", who were allowed to stay safe and sound at home, while shaming even underage boys into joining the army by throwing white feathers at them.

i am reminded of the final episode of band of brothers when the german general gives that speech to his soldiers 'you deserve long and happy lives in peace'...a peace none of these men will ever know.
